Yes they did, because the games became meaningless as they weren't consistently competitive. Players lost interest. Clubs lost interest. Fans lost interest. Had they been competitive and tv ratings equalled GF's like the RL version there is not a chance in the hell the clubs would have got in the way.
But end of the day it was the clubs and later the AFLPA. Clubs didnt want to release players, so less and less of the best were available for Origin as the clubs were focussed on the flag. Fans lost interest because the Clubs did. Throw in the the general feeling that Adelaide and West Coast in particular effectively represented their states - and in fairness in the late 80s and 90s they did focus on SA/WA talent - as well as the fact that one off origin matches just didnt have any appeal to anyone. Low attendances followed - and attendance has always been a key driver of the leagues decision making process, tv was acceptable if not spectacular, low crowds werent.
Yep. All in all the lack of competitiveness killed it. In this case we're debating what came first........the chicken or the egg! You're saying the clubs killed the competitiveness by withdrawing players. I'm saying the lack of competitiveness and general interest is why the clubs withdrew players.
Once again its two great minds having a minor disagreement!!!

That’s was my perception too… if it came to what was best for the club then that won out.

and more evidence isolated games rate better than concurrent games. Well over 700k for one Saturday night game involving Melbourne clubs.pussycat Mark 11 wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 12:08 pmLIVE: NRL: COWBOYS V ROOSTERS FOX LEAGUE 241,000

Wallabies v France Game 3
691,000 (Metro 496,000 Regional 195,000)
Seven Saturday night
#AFLDeesHawks 578,000 (Metro 427,000 Regional 151,000)
Actually, not bad numbers for the Wallabies. When Stan is counted it'll be around 800k or a few more. Still behind most RL FTA games in total but goes to show they will get support if the Wallabies are winning.
The test will be when they come up against the All Blacks, Springboks and the best European teams......not 2nd or 3rd raters like the frogs sent out.

you are still comparing a home and away game to the national RU team? How far has RU fallen?

Good point. The AFL folk here are too thick to realise RL and RU have multiple tiers of their sport. Unlike their mess which has only the domestic game. They will discount an international game because their game has nothing to compare it with. It's one of those excuses they use when the other excuses aren't working!!!!

The highest level of the AFL is AFL finals. In Sydney the ratings were 413k for the AFL GF last year despite 2 Melbourne values playing.Pippen1994 wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 1:44 pmHighest level of rugby are wallabies who play numerous matches throughout year.NlolRL wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 1:41 pmLOLPippen1994 wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 1:33 pm

How does international series vs Ireland go?! Must be ratings bonanzaThe_Wookie wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 3:33 pmThey'll discount it because grand finals, national teams and origin are theatre events - people watching out of patriotic duty or curiousity, and then the next day they go about their business like nothing happened. As such true popularity not reflected in regular season - its why the socceroos will rate 2 million for a world cup game and the next weekthe aleague will rate 11,000. Its why Origin rates 2.7m, but come the weekend, will rate 700l. Its why the Wallabies will rate 800k, but Super teams rate less than 100k. You fucking know this.Terry wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 1:55 pm
