Melbourne Storm will launch their own branded home loan and personal loan service on Thursday to become one of the first sporting clubs in Australia to offer members access to financial products.

The Storm, which lost to the Canberra Raiders in the first week of the NRL finals series last weekend, is launching Storm Money in partnership with the private My Local Broker, and will also offer car financing solutions.

My Local Broker will be the funder of the loans, and it and the Storm will share commissions from deals brokered on behalf of Storm members through a dedicated online portal. The club also plans to extend the offerings to retail, small business and commercial loans.

Storm chief executive Dave Donaghy said the concept arose from a survey of the club’s 25,000 members this year about their financial priorities.

“We looked at our sponsorship portfolio and found we had a gap in the banking sector,” Mr Donaghy said.

“So we asked our members questions like how many had home loans and whether they would be looking to switch a home loan to another provider in the next 12 months, and if they’d look favourably at a Storm offering or a partner of the Storm.

“We found there was a clear demand for this, and looked at our options and went and got the necessary approvals. Delivering meaningful savings to our members is fundamentally important and we believe we have a model that will compete with the traditional lending market.”

Almost 40 per cent of Storm members have home loans and close to 60 per cent told the club they were looking to refinance within a year, with 40 per cent saying they’d be likely or highly likely to change if offered an exclusive deal from a Storm sponsor.

“It is no secret a club like ours has to look for different revenue streams, and if we can do that and get a good deal for our members, and they save some money from it, then it is a win-win situation,” Mr Donaghy said.

“And any money we make from this will go back in our football program. Our owners have never taken dividends from the club as payment.”

My Local Broker is owned by Gerry Ryan, a part-owner and director of the Storm and owner of the Jayco caravan manufacturing business that accounts for the bulk of his $488m fortune on The List — Australia’s Richest 250.

“We call them the rate chasers in that they go out and find the best rates for their customers,” Mr Ryan said. “I’ve been involved with it for four years now, and it is a good business and it has deals with about 40 or so different loan providers.”

Mr Ryan said Jayco acted as a barometer for discretionary spending habits — “We’re the first into a recession and first out of it” — and described sales conditions as tough earlier this year. “But in the past six weeks our sales are ahead of what they were in the same time last year, so there is certainly signs of a recovery.”

Mr Donaghy said the Storm would go close to breaking even this year, depending on the finals results. The club plays Parramatta in an elimination final on Saturday. The Storm will also look in the off-season to revisit its plan to sell shares in the club to its fans, under a plan for it to sell a minority stake to members — a first for an Australian team.

That’s initiative to sell shares. Not sure I would be keen whilst they are not making a profit though. Although good to see them exploring revenue streams to address this. My question would be to myself is if they are making a loss after a sustained period of success what happens when they are not doing so well. What’s the balance sheet look like ... how much capital and liabilities are and whether assets actually are valued correctly. But growing the business ... good idea. No risk in this really as basically they are getting a finders fee.

Rugby League crowds have increased by 24 per cent in Melbourne compared to 2015 while the Storm’s membership has risen from 15,000 to 25,000 over the same period. That’s a 60% membership growth. Participation growth is 24% over the same period. See you at the game tonight. #nrl

Ahhhh percentages. The spin doctors tool of choice. 1 person could go 1 year and two the next. Wow we had 109% growth in crowd sizes. Now in saying that I think the storm are doing okay in Melbourne. Membership is good (for an NRL side) and they get good crowds regularly (for an NRL side in an AFL state). I think they’re doing okay. Whether they are leading the way in regard to expansion. .... I think the Swans have them on that one.

The Minnowbourne Storm, keep winning, started playing in a new stadium around then and are still the most irrelevant football team in Melbourne

The suns are similar size to the titans and are in the gc and is a total different market Gollum

All up the storm are minnow and next to irrelevant in Melbourne! After 20 plus years and most of those successful! And only had one player from Melbourne represent them & the rest from interstate!

What’s gonna happen when the storm stop winning all the time

Back on this rot about players having to come from the area your team is in .
Was shown that gws have very little of their players from WS.

Nor should they. It’s not how afl works. Players come from all over. They do have the academy which is growing talent from western Sydney and Canberra I think with 30 players apparently going onto afl lists. The article I put up showed noted a young bloke from western Sydney who went into the giants list. Think he has played a game or two as well which is a good effort.

Would be interested how many western Sydney players are on afl lists though. I don’t suspect too high but as noted by someone else, this is growing. Western Bulldogs don’t only recruit for. Western suburbs if you get my point. It’s a draft.

Afl has a draft, players get nominated and can be drafted by any one and be playing anywhere on the country!

Nrlol clubs have catchment feeder areas!
1 player in 20 odd years to play for the Minnowbourne Storm crapper l

If that’s the best you have!
Gws have been a roaring success in their 7 years and Storm total failure in their 20

Hey ease up.
The storm are greatest team in NRL history.
More minors
More GF's
More wins
Than any other team.
They've had the holy Trinity of players.
The "Slater" the "Cronk" and the holy "Smith".
With Smith the GOAT holding just about every record that counts.

As far as NRL standards are concerned they make other teams look 4th grade instead of 3rd below country and state.

In that case, you’d think the storm the greatest league team of all would be generating hype in the junior leagues or among the kids today to be knocking down the doors of their feeder teams or comps to emulate those greats of smith, cronks or slater!

Or at least raid some of the local rugby league leagues for some juiced up fatties to take the field! :-k

Yeah the storm are the greatest ever, they have gone past St George who won 11 grand finals in a row. Don't know when it happened, but if an afl fan has stated it, it must be true.
