Re: GWS / SUNS >> How much more dollars
its a huge market, and exploding with population..
same as the Gold Coast>> especially in the North.
we could only be a few years away, from both clubs reversing on the table.
now that would give a good view of things..
Interesting times ahead for both franchises..

I think the giants should’ve been placed elsewhere in Sydney/NSW, it is going to be a long hard slog and they can’t afford to be towards the bottom of the ladder. The AFL is committed to their long term survival but there is a lot of work to do to develop support in the area.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.

Re: GWS / SUNS >> How much more dollars
The AFL did do their homework for 20 odd years. Working with schools, having agreements with developers to put Aussie Rules ground in their subdivisions, supporting local clubs and those new clubs. And they still made mistakes I feel. It is a long haul... but look at Sydney Swans... a basket case. People in Sydney had no knowledge of Australian Rules now they are a known brand. It is played in schools and clubs and leagues everywhere for people to play. This same situation now faces gws but it has to be done. Grow or die. Going somewhere where AFL is already the major sport is not expanding. Tapping new markets is what is needed. This is why they needed to go to western Sydney .... to not do so would have been the mistake. But they did rush the end of it I feel due to the Wonderers success. I also think them winning the premiership is too early.Quolls2019 wrote: Sun Sep 15, 2019 1:48 pmI think the giants should’ve been placed elsewhere in Sydney/NSW, it is going to be a long hard slog and they can’t afford to be towards the bottom of the ladder. How embarrassing - a plastic team with no fanbase playing for the game's biggest prize. Fans of real teams must be pissed.

With the axing of North Sydney Bears.

Yes, I agree. As I have said prior, I think the culture that arose from rl and ru battles in Sydney over the years has transferred to the AFL. Seems football codes there seem class based to a degree. Whereas, despite stereotypes of working class teams (Collingwood) and rich teams (Carlton) within the code, AFL/vfl/ sanfl/wafl/tafl have no other code to rival it so such culture between codes doesn’t exist. Explains I think that Sydney Swans are seen as the “Toffs” and Chardonnay swilling types... a niche usually reserved for Union In Sydney.

Re: GWS / SUNS >> How much more dollars
You really want to pin it down to that. I don’t think there are any players from Collingwood playing for Collingwood, not sure how many port Adelaide players are from port Adelaide. You must remember that whilst there is a culture I believe in nrl of coming up through a club from the region you grew up in, the AFL did away with this 30 odd years ago. Although there are concessions for gws and suns re: recruiting from certain areas.
