AFL clubs’ pokies profits climb to record $105 million
FOOTY’S addiction to poker machine cash has climbed to record levels — accounting for a third of some club revenues
Punters’ losses on 290 money-spinning machines operated by Carlton totalled $17 million, or 30 per cent of the Blues’ total revenue.
The IBISWorld report lists Hawthorn as the AFL’s second-richest club behind West Coast, with assets minus liabilities of $41.6 million.
The Hawks have 165 poker machines, which stripped punters of $19.5 million last year — 28 per cent of total revenue.
Brisbane (29 per cent), Essendon (23 per cent) and Melbourne (22 per cent) also rely heavily on pokies.

Re: AFL clubs’ pokies profits climb to record $105 million
Hey I saw that headline in the herald sun and wondered how long it would be before crapper posted it lol. I assume he does a daily search for negative AFL articles lol.
The headline said one third of profits ... which I thought was well known for some clubs with the arguement being that they are not solely reliant on poker money. Not saying one third isn't a sizeable chunk however.

Re: AFL clubs’ pokies profits climb to record $105 million
Five AFL clubs awarded new 20-year licenses to operate pokies
Five Victorian AFL clubs are set to continue taking millions of dollars from pokies after the state government announced the recipients of new 20-year licenses for gaming machines, despite four rival Victorian clubs recently committing to sell their pokies.
Carlton, Hawthorn, Essendon, Richmond and St Kilda have been handed 20 year licenses - beginning in 2022 and running to 2042 - to continue operating pokies at venues around Melbourne following an application process that began in October 2017.
Collingwood, Geelong, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs will sell their pokies and with that surrender millions in guaranteed yearly revenue, while North Melbourne have long been pokies-free.
AFL clubs keeping pokies were handed licences to operate the same amount of machines they currently own with Carlton (290 machines) the most followed by Essendon (190), Hawthorn (165), Richmond (97) and St Kilda (83).
Hawthorn generated the most revenue from pokies in the last financial year ($24.3 million) followed by Carlton ($18.4 million), Essendon ($11.6 million), Richmond ($5.3 million) and St Kilda ($2.09 million).
It's understood the clubs have told the AFL they'd like to sell their pokies, but don't have viable ways to replace the revenue. The new 20 year licenses can be sold at any time.
Richmond are believed to have approached the AFL to discuss how the league could subsidise the pokies exits. The AFL, led by chairman Richard Goyder, wants to be pokies-free.
Hawthorn said they take responsibilities around gambling “very seriously” and that they signed the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation charter in 2014. Hawthorn “will seek to identify new non-football business ventures” as part of their “2050 vision”.
“The Hawthorn Football Club aims to be financially secure and independent from the AFL, as a result the club is reliant on our non-football investment,” Hawthorn’s statement read.
The Hawks said they employ 130 staff at their pokies venues which are "much more than gaming venues".
Carlton, St Kilda and Richmond did not provide comment.
Collingwood, Geelong and the Western Bulldogs were still allocated pokies by the state government, but have publicly stated they will selling them as soon as possible. Collingwood said in July they would have sold their stakes by October.
Melbourne sold their entitlements but will continue to operate the Bentleigh Club without pokies. The Demons made almost $11 million from the sale.
Glen Eira, the municipality where the Bentleigh Club is located, had the biggest drop in pokies of any council in the state government's post-2022 allocation.
Alternatively Essendon, who have 89 pokies at the Melton Country Club, want to extend their lease at the venue, as The Age revealed in July. Melton as a municipality is facing the biggest increase of poker machines out of any.
Council will decide on November 12 if Essendon's lease will be extended. It's expected to be granted. The Bombers have another 101 machines at Windy Hill.
Carlton have pokies at Club Laverton, The Vic Inn in Williamstown, The Manningham Club in Bulleen and The Royal Oak Richmond. Hawthorn's pokies are at Vegas at Waverley Gardens in Mulgrave and the WestWaters Hotel in Caroline Springs. Richmond have pokies at the Wantirna Club. St Kilda's pokies are at their Moorabbin social club.
Pokies losses across Victoria are hitting record levels, with $229.4 million pumped into machines in September 2018, the most ever for that month.
Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman Tim Costello said the 2022 pokies license expiry date should have been the "perfect opportunity for all AFL clubs to leave the pokies".
“The AFL should be offering incentives for AFL clubs to exit the pokies industry because it is disappointing that AFL clubs have bought 825 entitlements through this $1.2 billion government auction to operate machines for another 20 years at remaining AFL pokies venues where a clear divestment is yet to be announced," he said.
“The City of Melton has the highest concentration of pokies losses inflicted by major sporting clubs (one Hawthorn venue, one Essendon and two Melbourne Racing Club venues), which makes the decision on the proposed 29 year lease with Essendon at the Melton Country Club all the more important.”
