When adding to the mix the AFL’s higher Google trends ranking (100) compared to the NRL (78), it is clear that the AFL were the true winners of the 2017 grand final, which notably was achieved with a 48 per cent smaller Facebook audience than the NRL.

March heralded the start of the AFL and NRL 2017 seasons. This, along with other sports events – both local and abroad – drove increases in Australians going online for sports-related content, according to data released by Nielsen.

Nielsen Digital Ratings (Monthly) data revealed 11.2 million Australians visited online content related to the sports category via any device during the month of March 2017, up 8% compared to February 2017

The top five sites and apps in the sports category ranked by unique audience all reported strong, double digit growth in March 2017 compared with the prior month. Telstra Media AFL reported 3.4 million (+68%), ESPN Digital Network 3.3 million (+63%), Telstra Media NRL 2.2 million (+69%), Fox Sports 1.9 million (+36%) and Cricket Australia 1.7 million (+14%) – see chart below.

The data above describes unique audience numbers for Australians accessing sports-related content in March 2017. As you can see the AFL are over 50% more than the NRL

Australians love sport. And the ways in which they engage with sport is changing before our eyes. There are new ways to watch, new ways to connect and the audience demographic is also changing.

BATTLE OF THE CODES FOR EYEBALLS
When it comes to sports brands, Telstra Media AFL attracted the most people to their online content with a unique audience of 4.3 million Australians during July 17, up 11% compared to the previous month. In second place was ESPN Digital Network with 2.6 million people, (+14%), followed by AFL Live Official App with 2 million people, (+9%).

Fourth place was news.com.au – sport (+35%), fifth place was Telstra Media NRL (4%), sixth was FOX SPORTS (+13%), seventh was ESPN Footytips (+2%) and eighth place was MSN Sports, (+50%).

ESPN remained in ninth position with a unique audience of 1.0 million (+30%), followed by NRL Official App in tenth place with a unique audience of 1.0 million (-4%).

Across participating publishers under measurement in Digital Content Ratings, Sundays attracted the most people to sports content online in July 2017. During the month, the highest peak average daily unique audience was achieved by Telstra Media AFL was 649K, followed by News.com.au - Sport with 584K and Fox Sports with 458K.

Lastly, you see a graph titled TOP SOCIAL INTERACTIONS BY SPORTS/CODES which is based on twitter and facebook interactions. The AFL is miles ahead of the NRL and even miles ahead of NRL SOO.
