Racial Vilification

Post by Beaussie »

How is this rubbish still happening in 2011? Shame on you Justin Sherman. Good to see the AFL act swiftly. Tend to agree with Aker that the apology from Sherman was not sincere and merely words put together by the Bulldogs. I thought our game had move on from this rot.

To be honest I think four weeks was weak as piss. Nowadays racial vilification is up there with getting physical with umpires, and in this case allegedly it wasn't just the once. He was doing it all day! Four weeks? He should have got four YEARS!!

I'm just saddened to hear this rubbish is still happening on the field. Even worse to hear it was going on all day.

My website has an award called "Idiot of the Month". I've nominated Sherman for June.

So I guess this means the AFL has lost some cred over this affair? Cant say I've checked the story but might be a good time for the pair of you to admit that the AFL has some fairly dodgy characters involved, probably no more or less than Rugby League eh?

No. I'll bet there has been more vilification in the RL, and they've swept it under the carpet like they always do. Is it a reportable offence in the NRL BTW? It is in the AFL, and not just racial either incidentally.

I'd bet you're wrong actually. The very fact the AFL needed to bring in the vilification act was because of how rife it was, and still is obviously. Bloody disgraceful. I wouldnt be surprised if it has something to do with the amount of bogans living in the southern states and playing Aussie Rules.

In League its popped up from time to time but I'd say less so than in AFL. And your typical excuse of 'swept under the carpet' can be used in any argument at all times so please cut the bullshit or I'll start using the same line of argument to you. ie "there have been many more cases but the AFL has just 'swept them under the carpet'"

I've heard of many more instances of racial vilification in the NRL. Even at representative level. The AFL was the first sports code in Australia to address the issue of racial vilification. It took the NRL years before they finally followed the AFL's lead like everything else. So yes, TLPG is right in the sense that for years the NRL swept it under the carpet pretending there was no issue.

I dont think so Beaussie. I think less in League and I think there has not been that much 'sweeping it under the carpet'. I think there has simply always been less of it in Rugby League.

And I'd reckon that this is still the case today. Two main reasons

1: AFL has always had more Aboriginal players and more white bogans playing the game. League is more multicultural, and therefore more lilkely to be understanding of others.

2: AFL is a much more bitchy/nasty sport than RL ever since they hardened their rules around fighting on the field (See KE's "The changing nature of violence..." post in fight club  )

Having said this I applaud the work the AFL has done in rying to stamp it out. I think their initiatives around recruiting Indigenous players and promoting and celebrating the huge contributions Indigenous players and communities give to the game is second to none.

A point. There was a famous instance of vilification back in the days when fighting was almost the norm in AFL - or not.

I think it was 1970. Syd Jackson, an Aborigine, was reported for striking Lee Adamson IIRC. Jackson got off because he claimed that Adamson racially abused him, something that Adamson admitted to.

However it was established many years later that they both lied in order to get Jackson off. He did go on to play in a premiership side that year.

So don't anyone try to claim that the problem started when fighting was cracked down on - even if it didn't really happen in that instance there was an awareness of it happening.

Edit - More baiting against the forum guidelines, KE? When will you learn?

NRL failed. And that's the end of the subject.

(Removed racist post from Grim Reaper - any term describing skin colour is racist. Removed baiting post from AFL Warrior, and an attack on the moderator by Grim.)
