Dwindling Crowds for the TOP of the Ladder Melbourne Storm

Post by Beaussie »

Gee, usually success gurantees a bandwagon effect and bigger crowds for sporting teams.

How do NRL supporters explain the drop in crowds for the top of the ladder Melbourne Storm playing out of their brand new stadium in Melbourne? Gees, how many more premierships does the NRL and News Ltd have to buy/gift them to get the people of Melbourne interested?

I remember NRL supporters and the Storm admin saying crowds would increase with a new stadium as fans did not like Olympic Park. One can't help but notice a worrying trend with average crowds in 2010 when the Storm finished last, and 2011 when the Storm are on top of the ladder. Oh dear, now that's a real worry when you add the pathetic tv ratings the Storm attract in Melbourne. Will the Storm ever break the 15k or even 13k average mark. Do the people of Melbourne even care? I guess not.

Average Crowds

2011 - 12,422

2010 - 14,670

Good point TLPG. Needs a thread of it's own to compare the Gold Coast Suns against the Gold Coast Titans. A heads up, it's not good news for the NRL and it cheerleaders.

The silence from NRL cheerleaders regarding the fortunes of the top of the table Storm is very telling indeed. Crowds continue to drop and like most Victorians, even NRL supporters don't care about the Storm.

Its the Suns first season. Plus, AFL crowds are usually bigger anyway. Plus, you needed an NRL playerr to boost the clubs profile. Plus, theyve been given big concessions.

I missed this one
gee I need to pick up my act don't I

umm
Beaussie
again, comparing a season total average from 2010 , to an incomplete season ..2011

the Storm WILL surpass their 2010 average .. by the end of 2011
a remarkable feat given many fumbleball merkins predicted they'd die off in 2011 as a result of last years unfortunate scandal & would be lucky to get half of the support they got in 2010

but here we are
with Membership increased from 2010 ( 11K in 2011)
with crowds that will be in excess of 2010.. by seasons end
& some pretty impressive TV figures
( compared to the Swans in Sydney anyway)

well Done Storm
to be going this well with all these hurdles is a wonderful effort

Ahem. The person who boosted the Suns profile was Gary Ablett Junior, not Karmichael Hunt. The only concessions the Suns got were in the draft.

For Raider, the fact that Masterchef doubled live State of Origin in Melbourne is a rather bigger worry than the NRL will be willing to admit. So don't bring up the subject of TV ratings in Melbourne for thugby if you don't want to be proved wrong.

& the reason behind singing an NRL star ... a person who has rarely played the game ... for over 1 million dollars a season was for what
Sh.its n Giggles ?
if there was ever an indicator of which code rules on the coast .. it is this
Ablett is a minow in SE Qld compared to Khunt
the AFL knew this ... Ablett was not going to get the attention by himself
they needed a star from the Coasts No 1 Game
&
if the NRL is worried about 340K veiwers for League in Melbourne
imagine what the AFL are thinking when they look at AFL ratings in Sydney 8-[ :_<> :(/

They should have pulled more than Masterchef no matter what the number.

They also paid Ablett more than they paid Hunt. And I'll try and find a source, but when the AFL promotion started properly on the Gold Coast the man at the forefront was Ablett - as in front page of the Gold Coast Bulletin. When the Suns were playing VFL they weren't getting as much publicity - and Hunt was already there!

And the Swans should attract more then a re run of the telle tubbies
shouldn't they ?
I know which ratings numbers I'd prefer

& you didn't answer my question
why did they sign Khunt for a million a year ... thats big money for a rookie wouldn't you say ?

In order to outbid any NRL club is the reason. The Suns took advantage of the AFL's higher salary cap and made sure that no NRL club could match the bid.

The Swans do attract a bigger audience than a Teletubbies re-run for the record.

Why did they want him though ..... at that price ?
if Gary Ablett is all they needed .. why spend an amount that is more then 95% of AFL players salary's .. on a virtual novice
seems awfully desperate to me

oh . & the swans probably do ourate telle tubbie re runs .....
just  :_<> :(/

You've been doing exactly the same in other threads when comparing the Swans in 2010 to the Swans in an incomplete season 2011.

Membership still hasn't matched the numbers from 2010. An aim of 11k members in 2011 is pathetic in sports mad Melbourne. I also hear the Melbourne Rebels have caused the Storm all sorts of problems now that the market for Rugby is fractured in Melbourne.

Crowds for the Storm remain embarrassingly low despite the team being on top of the ladder. Will the Storm ever average 13k -15k? History shows that's highly unlikely even in sports mad Melbourne.

As for tv ratings, the Storm continue to get belted by all other oppostion on Channel 9 when broadcast before midnight. That is something Channel 9 are well aware of and as a result are unlikely to show anymore Storm games live particularly when the NRL doesn't even push the issue.

Finally, to your final point regarding all the hurldes for the Storm. You're kidding right? The Storm are provided with millions upon millions of handouts direct from the NRL and News Ltd annually to ensure they play in finals and grand finals regualarly. How NRL supporters of other clubs continue to support to the detriment of their own clubs fortunes is beyond belief. Sad really.

the Storm's membership numbers have increased :? 11K is their highest number to date up from 10K last year
& I don't give a hoot if 11K members is pathetic by Melb Standards .. they continue to rise ... & if the Storm win the comp this year.. they'll continue to rise ,as will their crowds
when will they average 15K .. well this year :? ( after finals ) & as I said
that will go up again if they are premiers

the Rebels... phht their a fad , similar to the Suns
& like the Suns but unlike the Storm, they're cr@p .. awful , a team of plodders
if both these new sides don't start getting the results soon ... they'll be dispatched to the scrap heap of disinterest real quick

the Storms ratings in Melb are better the the Swans ratings in Syd
if you describe them as being belted by everything .. what terminology do you use to describe Swans Ratings in Sydney
for .. belted doesn't seem strong enough

the Storm are on Leagues fontier
& what a wonderful team we have as our pioneer side in uncharterd territory ... a glorious 2nd decade awaits them
