ive lived in 4 states and ive never heard anyone call soccer footy ever.

Do you think that may be because of the fumbling zealot circles you move in Wookie? I have heard soccer called footy many many times but I suspect I mix with a different demographic than you do.

yes should have clareified. In south east qld I hear rl referred to as league and ru to union. I just assumed as there were two dominant footy codes (well used to be just those two mainly) that that is how people differentiated the two. In AFL states there has been one main code so saying you were going to the footy or football meant one thing. I imagine if you said you were going to the footy in qld 30 years ago people would ask league or union ? Nowadays, if you say you are going to the footy (as I still have a habit of doing) people always ask which one . I guess as well this could mean one of three in winter. That is why I think in non AFL states it is moving more toward identification of the code.... AFL, league, union ... and she cover still gets bandied about although a big push toward football for that.
