Is it they do not want the Game going head to head with the NRL Game ????????

I think it has a lot to do with young kids - they found that twilight games still get the same ratings but kids were more likely to attend - actually very common sense the Swans have 56k members because all the kids they gave free tickets to in the 80's and 90's have now grown up and become members and had their own families with continues to increase membership - get them young and keep them - Melb Storm whilst don't schedule games to cater for this approach it the same way and give juniors season tickets.

the NRL is going down the same path as rugby, they sold too much shit to fox. They try to blame the super league war, But its bullshit. they sold all the rights to a service only available to a portion of the public, an entire generation has grown up with an average of 2 free to air games a week and a good portion of those games were the brisbane broncos.

NRL crowds really started taking hits in the years since they lost Saturday night football. Its not hard, a lack of exposure, a lack of access = a downturn in support. only diehard supporters are going to get foxtel in order to watch football. All the casual fans and those with a mild interest simply wont give shit which is bad because the bigger comps grow the more reliant they are on casual and mild supporters.

this is why the AFL has such a better deal, its not just because of the money which gets all the headlines, its because exposure and access is maintained for the majority of people. foxtel numbers for the AFL are going up because like always diehard supporters supporters will pay for fox (hell they will even feel a need to defend it) but at the same time there's no "need" to watch football on fox. there's no teams "relegated" to foxtel week in and week out like in the nrl. which is fantastic from a generational standpoint.

You look at both rugby and the nrl, you can see you have about ten years of overselling to fox before things start breaking down. Now for both league and union the problem is they are trapped, Sadly the last NRL CEO saw what had happened and tried to get them out of that trap, the result was they sacked him, then his replacement made things objectively worse for pennies on the pound all because they unwilling to take a hit in tv rights dollars.

you look at footy in melbourne as basically the pinnacle of sporting support in this country, its market saturation, the amount of footy related products on FTA, the high profile nature of the game down there, none of this can be achieved through foxtel. You need the water cooler effect, you need blokes to be able to talk about footy on monday morning. Which in a national competition where clubs can be playing in another state (or in the case of league and union other countries) access to the game is vitally important, You don't get the water cooler effect by people only knowing the final score.

Even without the big AFL foxtel deal, long term the NRL would still see a downturn in fox numbers, as it has seen with FTA and bums on seats. meanwhile increased fta tv access in most states has seen an increase in both in tv ratings and crowd numbers. Because exposure brings people into the game the only state that the AFL really struggles in now as far as growing the market is QLD specifically brisbane.

Why? because the lions are not only shithouse atm, But they share a market with a club who's enjoyed decades of FTA coverage and market saturation. that's the power of exposure and access.
