Will the NRL ever expand again??
Just curious with the last expansion club in the NRL (Storm) coming in 1997, will the NRL ever expand while there has been a lot of talk the AFL has brought in 3 clubs (Power 97, Giants 09, Suns 09). The A league has formed, Netball, BB RU, and now the AFL has launched the Women's league. With expansion it appears just lip service in the NRL have the missed the boat are they falling behind is National just Queensland and NSW?

Re: Will the NRL ever expand again??
short answer (YES)
the NRL want a tight / close / fair competition
and are not 100% sure on player talent to keep this happening (when they do expand)
So they are going back to grass roots.
Strengthening NSW AND QLD CUP
Brining in FIJI AND PNG (extra players)
while also slowly making other markets bigger..
There is BIDS for Entry in the NRL left right & center.
Perth Brisbane 2 Ipswich Western Corridor PNG Wellington Central Coast..
You will find when they are happy with the 2 major state leagues progressing forward.
expansion will happen..
the 2018 to 2022 TV Rights contracts have a section in there to allow expansion and extra teams added.
and the FTA AND FOX will have to pay more.
the Question is will they announce expansion in the new tv RIghts Deal 2018-2022
or will they wait until 2020 and announce new teams along with a NEW TV DEAL

would love to hear your opinion ...?The_Wookie wrote:plaer talent isnt why the NRL hasnt expanded recently.
I will expand on my comments earlier...
the NRL are also making sure all 16 clubs are financial going well.
and are set in stone for the future.
as they have Newcastle which is to be sold very soon (very around the 15mill to 20mill mark)
and Gold Coast titans which has risen in value..
going into the new rights deal the NRL will be a lot stronger position going forward.
But in saying I don't think it is money at all..
as it would add to the value of the rights especially a QLD team..
the NRL will strengthen its Stronghold and than look abroad.

Re: Will the NRL ever expand again??
So is the short answer no expansion till 2022? Is so that's 6 years away! That's a very long time don't you think they may have missed the boat with Perth?? 6 years with no permanent presence in Perth isn't that handing over the region to RU?? Also Adelaide no doubt isn't even a faint hope, why Wellington?? If there's a further downturn in mining (and I have heard NG is just about rooted), you'll have a lot of NSW immigrants in WA flooding back.

That's the thing Wookie they have been saying it for 10 years with little to no sign of them being serious and keep putting a decision off.The_Wookie wrote:Deals with News are why theres been no second Brisbane side seince 1988. if the bids were that serious and deemed viable wouldn't the NRLOL have seriously looked at them & made some progression with them
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus
ARU $27 million
NRLOL $25 million
Leagueiscrap
and she still changes your nappies as well!

very true indeed
Thank goodness NEWS Limited is out of the running of the game (except for the Broncos)
Expansion in heartland areas would come at zero cost to the NRL
I don't think you would see a Giants style of running things from the NRL. (in Perth for example)

I think the NRL will do expansion either at the end of current new Deal or start of next.
(so yes give or take around the 2020 mark
Yes I do believe the NRL should of went into Perth market sooner.
with all this waiting around (it is not going to make Perth a better place to put a team..
Western Force in rugby Union is going so bad (it is almost on its kness...
Adelaide know 2 sports
AFL & Cricket
Wellington be a great option (a derby game to Auckland)
Crowds have been brilliant when played there.
and has plenty of potential in Wellington and south of NZ
As you have known...
THE NRL has been completely shockingly run for years.
2013 was the turning point.. it will take time...

Only if their prepared to commit long term and put a lot more effort into juniors down here at the moment it's the equivalent of a single 'D' grade comp for the whole city! Not impossible but investment on at least GWS proportions!Fred wrote:Melbourne should get another team
