Police have been called in to investigate after a junior rugby league player was allegedly offered a $500 bribe from an opposing player's father to pull out of their preliminary final in Wollongong last weekend in the latest match-fixing controversy to plague the sport.

The NRL confirmed on Friday that its integrity unit was aware of the alleged incident, and said it had referred the allegations to NSW Police.

The alleged bribe was said to have occurred ahead of last weekend's clash between the Collegians Junior Rugby League team and the Western Suburbs Rugby League Football Club junior team.

News Corp Australia reported that the father of a Western Suburbs player offered $500 to a Collegians player to feign an injury and pull out of the sudden-death game.

The Collegians player reportedly told his coach before the game that he was injured and could not play. Western Suburbs went on to win the game, and will play in the grand final in Wollongong on Saturday.

The allegations were only revealed when the player allegedly bragged about the money on Snapchat.

Asked about the allegations on Friday, an NRL spokesman said: "The integrity unit is aware of the matter and has referred it to the police."

A NSW Police spokeswoman said no details were immediately available about the alleged incident.

Fairfax Media has contacted Collegians Junior Rugby League and the Western Suburbs Rugby League Football Club for comment.

A Country Rugby League spokesman said the organisation was "aware of the allegations and have passed all information onto the NRL Integrity Unit".

It comes in the same week that police announced they had launched a strike force to investigate alleged match-fixing in the NRL.

Officers from the State Crime Command's Organised Crime Squad visited the offices of corporate betting agencies in recent months, trawling through records of bets and deposits in a bid to locate a money trail behind suspicions of corruption of three NRL games over the past two seasons.

As a result, they established Strike Force Nuralda and officers are expected to begin questioning dozens of players and officials in Sydney this week.
