AFL GAY PRIDE ROUND. Thoughts?

Myself I think it probably works alot better for AFL than other football codes due to the Swans and AFL having such a large gay fan base.
And if the homosexual community want to get behind a team. I think it is good the Swans are supporting that.
Looks like AFL is going all out, even having rainbow flags for the refs.

Yeah the NRL had Ian Roberts come out about 20 years ago when playing for Manly and was never an issue. So like other codes they don't probably need to prove anything.
The NRL are involved in plenty of other causes like Women in League round.

Saying that, AFL knows it is a sport which is better suited as a gay football code due to the nature of the game.
Some AFL fans don't like it. But AFL having no cheerleaders and gay pride rounds shows it is a big part of their target audience.

Outspoken AFL player Jason Akermanis has warned gay players the game is not ready for them to come out of the closet.

"If a player wants to out himself, then I say good luck," the Western Bulldogs star wrote in his weekly Herald Sun column.

"But I believe the world of AFL footy is not ready for it. To come out is unnecessary for a lot of reasons.

"Imagine the publicity associated with a current player admitting he's gay. It would be international news and could break the fabric of a club."

Akermanis said an openly gay player could make his team-mates uncomfortable.

"Locker room nudity and homoerotic activities are normal inside footy clubs," he wrote.

He said it was not the role of sport to lead the way in changing community attitudes.

"Away from football I'm all for any initiative that helps lessen public bias against homosexuality, such as IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia), which was run on Monday.

"I know there are many who think a public AFL outing would break down homophobia, but they don't live in football clubs.

"It's not the job of the minority to make the environment safer. Not now, anyway."

It's no big deal being gay in the NRL .
Player or official .
We are accepting of all races,creeds & people .

We won't know how it'd go in the AFL because the racist homophobic hicks who follow it would probably think it's wrong .
