Interesting statistic on $

Post by post_hoc »

Came across this on my twitter feed, the most up to date one seems to be at the start of last year but for all of AFL's claims as being the biggest and richest and most popular sport in Australia and one of the richest in the Universe etc. It pay's it players peanuts.

The top 50 highest earning Australian Sports Stars, (from Feb 2015) has 1 AFL player at Number 47.

As an athlete looking to make a living, why would you ever play AFL, not like you will ever get a decent pay day, skills are not transferable to anything except maybe NFL kicker. At least NRL you can play League off against Union, and as Hayne has shown opportunity to switch to NFL.

Why would you bother as a professional athlete with AFL
Football in NSW
- Football 200,868
- AFL NSW/ACT 28,468
- Rugby League 96,041
- Rugby Union 40,685
Football has 22% more players than the other football codes combined

Yet their average players are paid more than ANY other code in Australia - whereas even rookies get paid in the AFL a min of $80k per annum - those on u20 or development sides in soccer and the other codes are living more or less on the dole!!! I know what I would prefer! Also at least we're not like the EPL where they pay so much in player payments that many clubs would be insolvent if not for billionaires treating the sport like a toy!!!

Well maybe you could elaborate slightly on your claims . There grant is larger than the NRL, but they have almost twice the number of mouths to feed.

In 2015 the average AFL wage was $300k.
in 2012 the average NRL wage was 220k. The NRL's grant to clubs has doubled in that time.

This sounds like another ' 'Swans are the biggest club in Sydney' bullshit rant.

Rookies in the first team or development teams. I assume AFL have reserve grade etc

yeah as i said individual sports or team sports based over seas, australian team based sports will never be able to compete with leagues like the EPL or the IPL as a lot of it comes down to population and $$$$$s
eg like thats where the A league suffers the best players head of to Englans or Europe as they have bigger populations, sponsors willing to throw more $ about
Australian sporting sponsorship

Well that's the problem because the AFL is see thru and publish these sort of details
http://m.AFL.com.au/news/2016-02-12/AFL ... first-time

The NRL doesn't as far as I can tell all I can find is their salary cap for 2016 is 6.55 mil and the average base wage in RL is 80,000 a rookies wage but the funny thing is that this does not add up even on the base wage of 80,000. I can't find how many players are on a NRL list but if we say there are 20 then the average is 327,000. But you would have to think at a minimum there would be 25 players on an NRL list that would mean the average is 277,000. http://www.zerotackle.com/nrl-resources ... eeSBHFo.97

But that makes no allowances for some players earring 500k plus which would mean the rest are getting less. Total payments in the AFL was over 200 mil in 2015 and the average wage over 300k
http://m.AFL.com.au/news/2016-02-12/AFL ... first-time
The salary cap this year is 10.6 mil per club of which the clubs must pay 10.07 mil.

So pussy Go get fucked

$2.8 million I believe, with 2 players may be paid outside the cap, there is also a floor (besides the cap) with Youth contracted players exempt.

The point of course being, that there is no limit on what a player can earn if picked up by another League.

Cases in point
Mile Jedinak former Central Coast Player $3m
Brett Holman - Parramatta Power (NSL) $3M
Mark Bresciano - Carlton (NSL) $2M now retired

Looks like Aaron Mooy will be gone when the transfer season opens, talks of $4M transfer fee.

whats the average player wage? the transfer fees are all well & good, but that makes the A league very relent on other leagues to poach or loan players, thats where the a league is very fortuniate something the other codes dont really have
