OMG - when are you going to admit that whether you like it or not AFL is Australia's national game?? It has the most revenue, TV ratings, crowds, memberships and sponsorships. While it isn't number 1 in participation it is significant - it doesn't have to 'BORROW' another sports participation figures like RL, nor does it have to use other tactics like soccer (e.g. Setting up soccer clinics in child care facilities). It is home grown and is an integral part of our community - if soccer vanished well the papers would lose any subscriptions or pay tv subscriptions (maybe SBS might lose some viewers but I doubt this as they would still use the EPL games).post_hoc wrote:Loved by most of the country?Pete_09 wrote:King u should tell all the Yanks that we have a sport of our own (exactly the way they do with Gridiron) which is loved by most of the country just like American Football is over there where we got massive crowds of 80,000 + to some games & average 35,000.

Get your hand off of it, it makes no impact in NSW or Queensland, it is watched at most by 2.6 million odd people on Grand Final Day (ie the super bowl day) out of 23 million people.
It is played by less kids than play a musical instrument, and less adults than netball, golf, tennis etc etc
By your reasoning, it is Netball that is loved by our nation.
Talk about delusions of Grandeur
In the US over1/3 of the population watch the super bowl, when you get to about 8 million then you might be able to compare.

Re: KE Reprting live from the U S of A
80-90% of people follow AFL in VIC, SA, WA, TAS & NT.
I would say 10-20% of people follow it in NSW while QLD would be about 20-25% & finally ACT which I have heard AFL is pretty popular so i would say about 30-40% follow it there.
Thats most of the country buddy!
Rugby League on the other hand:
I would say 50-60% of people follow it in QLD & NSW (Origin does not count in my stats)
Probs about 40-50% in ACT
In NT I will be generous & say 30-40%
While in VIC, SA, WA, SA & TAS about 2-5% follow it. (Ouch)
My stats are correct so AFL is KING in this country by a long way

Cricket is Australia's National Game, sorry but it is true. It is played professionally in every state, more people play it. In any metrics it is the National Game. AFL isn't I am sorry to burst your bubble. Soccer clinics in childcare centres? wow how cool is that, but we don't count those, we don't have to count those. We don't even have to count futsal and we still have a higher participation, but that is irrelevant. The claim that Australia LOVES AFL is wrong, I have shown it, just said that you guys are so desperate to be loved that you need to cling onto this fallacy.Swans4ever wrote:OMG - when are you going to admit that whether you like it or not AFL is Australia's national game?? Oh FFS you know we're talking about winter sport, it is Australia's national football code! 2nd they do count it because my daughters child care clinic has some sleezy soccer person that comes and they have to be registered which is counted like indoor (which is futsal). You haven't proved anything other than a pre-disposition to only use the stats that support your argument and ignore all others. You sir are an inbicile!post_hoc wrote:Cricket is Australia's National Game, sorry but it is true. It is played professionally in every state, more people play it. Merchandise sales, participation and TV ratings show Rugby League is loved more than AFL Australia no Australasia wide.
More professional and semi professional leagues in the neighbourhood, more than one country/continent involved weekly in multiple tiers all building towards full professionalism in the NRL down the track (shhhh, they are actually doing things underneath the NRL shock horror) which is way more than what the AFL or aussie rules has or ever has had or will ever have.

Re: KE Reprting live from the U S of A
Sorry para but the point was IN AUSTRALIA last I looked NZ and pacific islands are NOT in Australia - so your point has absolutely no relevance! 2nd participation 3rd, TV ratings 2nd, merchandising 2nd, revenue 2nd, crowds 2nd and falling, memberships 2nd. Get the trend here? That's because AFL is number 1 and as for NZ and pacific islands RU is their sport of choice it's only those that don't make it in RU that turn to RL, lastly whilst I agree PNG number 1 sport I would also say AFL has a very significant presence and has a side playing in the Nth Qld cup - so your point is really not that strong. Good try but fail again :DParraEelsNRL wrote:Merchandise sales, participation and TV ratings show Rugby League is loved more than AFL Australia no Australasia wide.

Re: KE Reprting live from the U S of A
Dominates is a very vague term what do you mean? Is the most popular code in those states - well I think I agree, participation wise well I think soccer is but it depends on what context your talking about. But it is not the only sport and it appears their is more competition than other states.ParraEelsNRL wrote:Well NRL still dominates the largest parts of Australia.
