I thought the idea was to yes get good crowds financially independent etc, but also develop the grassroots game in western sydney.

Was that not the aim?

grass roots development, directly relating to the giants, will take decades. Look at the Storm, 17 years of success in Melbourne and we are yet to see any visible signs of growth at grass roots level.

The only real measure we have is how the giants are supported, ie members and crowds. When they rise the club will become financially viable. Again, this took the Storm many years to get near financial stability, if theyve even got that now.

So, what crowds and membership levels do the Giants need to be considered successful?

Well the nrlol did have one Victorian based kid make it in the nrl.

So the storm and nrlols total expansion in to Victoria hasn't been a total disaster

Hopefully they ditch the Canberra experiment off. Leave it to the tax payers raiders.

I know the AFL say the GWS are a slow burn, they are there for the long haul etc, will they be competitive? No doubt the AFL is structured so they will eventually get there. Will Western Sydney "fall in love" I really don't think so, I just don't see western sydney kids flocking to play AFL, some will especially sons of former south of the border.

But AFL in the southern states is a cult, families live and breath it, kids play kick to kick at school etc etc. Sydney from my knowledge and Brisbane from my guessing, is simply not like that, even Rugby League isn't that tribal (for the most part) in my house I grew up following Parra, rest of the family followed St George, why? well lived in Western Sydney, played Rugby League for a school that produced players for Parra, played junior rep wearing parra colours etc etc. Not very common in Melbourne I believe it would be like 1 member following Carlton whilst the rest followed St Kilda.

Sydney isn't tribal like that, many many parents that grew up following and playing Rugby league have kids playing Football (soccer), some play both Rugby League and Football in this country are not a cult like AFL are (they are in other countries) but not here.

People may g to watch GWS when they win, they will abandon them when they lose, but they are not the beach head to stake a claim to Western Sydney that the AFL HO think.

You know this all sounds like what Rex Mossop and the RL cronies said about the Swans when they moved to Sydney in fact they said far worse! But look at me now!

Yep exactly the same - I was a kid when Sydney moved up and that's when I started playing AF, how many times I heard - no one is interested in AFL, the Swans will never be successful, they'll never get any grass roots support because it isn't Sydney's game. Well it's now 30 years on - the local junior comps have

Canberra has a strong AFL culture and is part of GWS's zone for player development and draft selections.

Raider is hiding his head in the sand to self-delude otherwise.

Two ACT clubs, Ainslie and Eastlake, play in the 11-club NEAFL (the AFL's equivalent of the NSW Cup, for the leaguies).

Two other strong clubs from down there, Queanbeyan and Belconnen, also contribute to the AFL culture at a senior level in the region:

In 2014, Logan Austin from Belconnen was drafted to Port Adelaide, so GWS is not the only beneficiary of rising AFL talent in the ACT.

2015 looks promising for more young players of Aussie Rules in the Capital Territory.
