NRL clubs want to copy the AFL

OUTGOING Melbourne Storm chief executive Mark Evans has called for a player recruitment overhaul and the introduction of an NRL rookie draft.
Evans, who will finish up at Storm the end of the month to return to the UK, believes the current model of clubs signing teenagers from junior carnivals is outdated and unjustifiable.
That includes and extends to the spending of about $20 million per year on players in under-20s and junior representative teams.
Evans said a move towards an AFL-like draft model would eradicate those issues.

“The AFL have got the right model, they are about elitism at the senior level with one squad and I hope one day we will be able to do that.

“That will produce the best product for the game. We do have two strong state leagues in Queensland and NSW and that’s where the development can be done (instead of the under-20s).”

This was the headline of the second article:
Broncos coach Wayne Bennett says NRL should axe under-20s if clubs want more cash
, and he was the one who made the claim

So unless Wayne Bennet is is an exec for the storm and Broncos, youre wrong

You want to be able to develop local heroes through your local team if you can. How much easier would it be for the Swans/Giants/Lions/Suns if people had local talent to cheer for week in/week out. For that matter it would also kill the go home factor that many clubs have to combat. It will be a very sad day when the NRL adopt the draft for the sake of reducing costs.
AFL now talking about bringing back zones and academies for all 18 clubs.

Id like to see the TAC Cup teams properly aligned with the AFL clubs as well, giving an under 18s competition that matches the reserves competition - and that should be national too.
The biggest problem will be who is aligned with whom?? Some areas are a lot stronger than others - for instance Eastern Rangers would easily be stronger than all of NSW - NSW might produce a Mills or Heeney but every year the Eastern Rangers have produced Patton, Boyd, Honeychurch, Hannebery, Mitchell - if that went to Collingwood then imagine what sort of side they would have year in year out. But if you got say Mildura - well you might only get a high quality player once in a while. Personally the Academies are meant to be for development - in NSW and QLD it's great - in Vic there is already 14 Academies there just called TAC clubs! There is no go home factor for any Victorian players picked up by a Victorian AFL club - there is interstate tho. Personally - I'd like to see NSW, QLD, NT, ACT and Tas carved up and made available for the 18 sides with all given responsibility to develop players. Then we get development of these regions without an unfair advantage.

In relation to Reserves TAC perhaps it could be aligned but what if you finish last and your area/zone has no quality players - the draft at least makes available quality players to rebuild with. Personally - I'd like to see the TAC remain and open to all to draft. I don't know what the answer is - perhaps 18 zones each which would have your unselected players with top up players from junior footy comps whose players ARE NOT in TAC - thus maybe unearthing a player who for whatever reason didn't get into a rep side.

Fark that, AFL can keep their shitty draft. Works fine the way it is.

NRL is already is a more evenly matched comp than the AFL with team players.
What next, changing to pussy shirt fronting and tiny shorts.
