Abbott government moves to let networks show main channels in HD
Sports fans have long complained that major sporting events - including the AFL and NRL grand finals - are not shown live in high definition (HD).
Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has proposed allowing television networks to broadcast their main channels in HD, SD or a combination of both - a move backed by the public and private broadcasters
Fairfax Media understands legislation is expected to be introduced in the spring session of Parliament. The change would come into effect immediately, meaning this year's football grand finals could be shown live in HD if the legislation is passed in time.
