The awesome stadium it is today, so proudly representing Sydney during the recent Cricket World Cup 2015, is mostly attributable to our city's embrace of Aussie Rules, the money fans spend to attend the games, and the hundreds of millions of dollars AFL generates in NSW from sports tourism.

Meanwhile, Manly fans won't travel; NRL fans watch games on TV spending little. Stay at home. No sports tourism. No economic multiplier effect.

Unsurprisingly, underused rectangular stadia become depressing, ruined circuses of decrepit sheds and neglected stands.

But don't blame the TV-besotted fans.

Blame-shift to the government.

The first fleet with ship loads of convicts arrived in 1788. Redfern wasn't cleared and subdivided for the first land sales of what was called "Redfern's Grant" until 1842.

BTW, Redfern was named after Dr. William Redfern, himself a convict for his involvement in a mutiny on the Nore. His surgical skills in his service to Gov. Macquarie (1810-21) were such that Macquarie, in gratitude, granted him 400 acres about 3 miles south of Sydney Cove.

An interesting detail: William Redfern married Sarah Wills. Her brother was Horatio Wills, and her nephew, Horatio's son, Tom Wills wrote the first laws for Aussie Rules football in May, 1859. The document in his hand writing and with his signature is in the Museum of Australian Sport.

Every Australian and especially every New South Welshman ought to be deeply proud of this indelible history.

That's right wookie, we don't only look at tv numbers. I also take a close look at society. Here in Sydney the AFL is becoming less and less significant. Sure we all rounded up and watched the 2005 gf because, well it was as I say a novelty. Knowing intimately about the code, I notice time and time again that people have no clue about the AFL. And these are the folk that go to the swans games.

The evidence is that in 2014, the four northern clubs (Swans, GWS, Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns) attracted a total of 948,000 to 46 games in NSW/ACT and QLD. An average of 20,608 per game.

The AFL is not the dominant code in the northern states. But it is seriously significant. And growing ...and growing ...and growing.

Phil Gould warned NRL Central not to underestimate the AFL.

Secondly, numbers at games is one thing, and we all know the unstructured loosely ruled game of marngrook is far better to watch at the ground than on tele. The tv perspective just can't capture the non-linear game well at all. So basically, your numbers, if they are even home game figures , reflect almost the entire audience for the code up north. the sum of tv and live viewers for the AFL in the north is absolutely pitiful.
