Brian fletcher will likely play this season and may go on for anotherR ten years. Who knows because the fact is, as a forty year old, Brian fletcher doesn't look out of place on the AFL field. In fact the old codger looks and is better than heaps of the younger fellas around him. I predict this trend will only grow.

Yes, in regards to professional sports, the AFL certainly is in a league of its own as a sport which does not require much skills or a high level of skills (it's been proven that blokes from completely diff sports can make the top level). And now it looks as though the AFL is one of the few professional athletic sports where 40+ year olds can flourish and thrive.

As a player who's played both rugby league and marngrook, it's quite straight forward. The AFL is a softer, slower and simpler product than the nrl. Thus old codgers and players of other codes alike can make it and flourish in the AFL.

They should really look at the positive inclusion this can be promoted as. Perhaps something like "the AFL - you can make it no matter ur age nor experience" :D

Lol, sorry Brian fletcher is an ex nrl player. I think he, as almost all nrl players, retired before he turned 34. It's just that the level of strength speed power and endurance required in the nrl means that folk need to be in their absolute physical prime and anyone over 34 just can't really cut it. We'll never see a 40+ year old in the nrl, nor will anyone next century neither.

But the AFL, well as long as you can trot pretty good at age 40+ then ur a pretty good shot at making the cut.

AFL is way out in front.
The fact that one guy can last so long in the game is a asset to the game.
IMO the growing attrition rate in AFL is a negative on the game.
Too many young robots and not enough characters.
I'm out of touch with rl these days but it does seem rl is losing it's older characters as well.

The AFL is in a league of its own in regards to the level of skill and the physical strength and agility of youth. If you can trot it out over a distance, you too can play in the AFL. It's truly a game for everyone

It really is in a league of its own. The poor old NRL is an embarrassment. I'd estimate in about another 10 years you'll be lucky if you can catch a game of NRL on TV in between the club rugby on the ABC. You can't keep running a business like the NRL, there is only so much money you can pour into a black hole...

One of our broad rules is to try and stay on topic. In this thread, the topic is (a) AFL (b) the fact AFL is the only footy code with a 40 year old and until last year two previously almost completely inexperienced code hoppers running around at the top level.

It's in a league of its own in that regard. I'm afraid if you can't refute that without going into another topic I.e rl management, then I win :D

If a Aflol player decided to play RL or RU even at state level ,it would not end well .

not a failure financially but certainly from a performance point of view, which is pretty funny given RL fans say AFL is easy. If so, why are they stars?

They succeeded at the highest level. Sure they didn't turn out to be superstars of the game, but they looked fine and sometimes decent players at the top level.

There's literally millions around who toiled at it all their lives and still couldn't look anywhere near as gods as izzy and khunt out there

Therefore compared to the nrl the AFL comp is relatively simple in terms of skills to make it.
