Wow, interesting find there superegz. I honestly thought it would've been closer but that's quite a thrashing isn't it.
There can only be a few reasons in my opinion.
1. Rugby league is significantly more popular
2. Afl supporters are technologically deficient
I think it's prob both.

Found the post:
"AFL 550k
Collingwood 244k
Essendon 242k
St. Kilda 93k
Hawthorn 128k
West Coast 144k
Carlton 150k
Sydney Swans 125k
Richmond 122k
Adelaide 109k
Freemantle 98k
Geelong 64k
Port Adelaide 58k
North Melbourne 54k
Western Bulldogs 57k
Brisbane Lions 63k
Suns 63k
Melbourne 35k
Giants 32k
Total: 1881k
NRL 597k
Broncos 294k
Wests Tigers 169k
Rabbitohs 157k
Warriors 123k
Storm 234k compared to 125k from the swans
Roosters 84k and another page 50k which I will not count
Sharks 62k
Knights 76k
Cowboys 74k and two other pages of 94k together which i won't count
Titans 123k
Eagles 89k
Eels 161k
Bulldogs 133k
Raiders 63k
Panthers 51k
Dragons 85k and another 34k page which im not counting
Total: 1978k"
from October 2013.
after a little maths, back then the NRL clubs total likes was 5% more than the total AFL clubs likes (despite having 2 less teams and not incl. rep teams) and the NRL page had 9% more than the AFL's.
By these updated figures, the NRL club total likes is now at 22% more than the AFLs club total and the NRL page has extended quite quickly to 36% more than the AFL.
so, the gap is widening.

Re: Clubs Facebook Likes
to answer the original question, the AFL appears to be better able to convert the average fan into attending games while NRL fans tend to watch at home. That's for a number of reasons, i think the product of RL is better enjoyed on TV while the aerial aspect of AFL lends itself more to a real world viewing. Sydney has far worse weather and transport than melbourne and also is a lot bigger geographically.
And the NRL has marketed itself better online: http://www.afr.com/p/lifestyle/sport/nr ... JXWBY6kOPP

Unfortunately they are pretty useless. It would be interesting to see how many of those likes are from Australian accounts. That along with the interaction of those accounts would give you a much better indication. Watch the video it is interesting.

couldn't find geographic distribution,
but as for 'people talking about it' they are dead even on 99k, but the AFLs GF was 2 days ago, while the NRLs is yet to happen so it should shoot far ahead of the afls peak. i saw a similar result last year from memory.
