Sporting Participation rates

ABS has all the participation stuff, the top Excel book here, on Table 8 or Table 15. Although it includes stuff like walking and yoga.
http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf ... enDocument

489.1 Soccer (outdoor)
450.2 Netball
354.8 Basketball
320.2 Football sports (touch football, Oztag, Gaelic, Gridiron)
281.2 Cricket (outdoor)

Battle of the Football Codes

One of the most debated topics in Australian sport concerns the never-ending argument about which football code is ‘Number One’ in Australia. Clearly there are large regional differences on this question, however on the pure numbers Soccer is clearly well ahead on a national basis. In addition, men clearly outnumber women in participation across all four football codes.

Soccer: 1.48 million (7.8%). Men: 1.10 million (11.6% of men); Women: 0.39 million (4.0%);
Australian Football: 0.62 million (3.2%). Men: 0.50 million (5.3%); Women: 0.12 million (1.2%);
Rugby League: 0.35 million (1.9%). Men: 0.27 million (2.8%); Women: 0.09 million (0.9%);
Rugby Union: 0.25 million (1.3%). Men 0.22 million (2.3%); Women: 0.03 million (0.3%).

both showing varying numbers
both lots of research show that the NRL is fast becoming a minnow sport :(/
Soccer is the most popular sport played in Australia out of all of the Football codes
AFL is second.
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus
ARU $27 million
NRLOL $25 million

and the most interesting stat of all is that while rates for soccer, aussie rules, netball, basketball etc are going up or are stable

league, union is going down...every year

sooner or later league is going to be a sport that you reminisce about when you're 68 telling your grandkids stories of when you went to watch manly vs the parry eels while you sat on a soggy muddy hill at brooky!

apparently there are only 700 registered juniors in the eastern suburbs for rugby league/roosters catchment

wasn't gonna laugh but i can't help myself, that's atrocious!

what are you plebs gonna do in 20 years, whos going to be filling out team sheets if the player pool keeps shrinking???

i think sooner or later things will get drastic and the nrl need to look at recruiting beyond humans, maybe recruit some animals like monkeys and buffalo's because the pool of humans they have taking up their sport seems to be shrinking with every year!

its got nothing to do with the participation numbers the AFL produces

the first list is the Australian Bureau of Statistics

the second list

The longest established and best known market research company in Australia, Roy Morgan Research has remained proudly independent through the decades.

With that independence, comes research free of hidden agendas — our respected Morgan Poll being an obvious example. This unerring, unbiased measure of the political climate has generated countless headlines over the years and caused politicians to quake in their boots.

suck it up basement dwellers, your game is declining all around :))) :(/
15 years time, local teams & leagues merging, folding to only but a few. the talent pool gets thinner and thinner for the NRL.
not attracting any new fans, the dinosaurs bogan & basement dwelling virgins that your game appeals to, will slowly die out to.
lap it up and enjoy it while you can :)))

700 is probably an all time record for the Roosters you gimp, try again as the Roosters have NEVER been known as a junior producing team like Parra or Souths or Penrith, Cronulla and St G Illawarra along with West Tigers, the rest of the Sydney teams not mentioned are blood sucking money throwing bludgers!

the landscape is already starting to change, there was no professional soccer league in this country till 2005. more and more kids have a chance of becoming a pro now more than ever, soccer is increasing on all levels while your sport is going backwards. not sorry lmao!!!!

WOW 160 Mill over 4 yrs..Just wow .
That's worth LESS than 1 yr of NRL or AFL rights. :(/ :(/ :(/

We have had some dumbos on here ,but jesus you are chasing hard the title of "Most Delusional Fucktard "

Get a grip or a carer, cause your posts are cringeworthy.

Oh & your sport moved to Summer ,it had no hope of competing with AFL & NRL ,& still got smashed by Cricket.
David Gallop's "unstoppable" A-League appears under siege with the Big Bash League threatening to become a summer juggernaut if the first free-to-air TV ratings of the Twenty20 tournament are anything to go by.

Football Federation Australia boss Gallop last week pre-empted the start of the BBL season with a series of remarks casting doubt over whether sports fans would embrace the short-form tournament while claiming his own competition was "unstoppable in Australian sport".

But coming from a former first-grade fast bowler, those comments are beginning to look like pure spin.

Cricket Australia executives are delighted with the response from fans to the third season of the BBL as it appeared on free-to-air TV on the Ten Network for the first time.

Each prime-time match on Friday, Saturday and Sunday earned more than one million viewers across Australia in regional and metropolitan areas.

On Friday night, the only time the A-League and the BBL went head-to-head on free-to-air TV, the round ball code was well and truly hit for six.

The BBL's Melbourne derby between the Stars and the Renegades was watched by around 804,000 people in the five capital cities.

By contrast, the A-League clash between Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets was viewed by only around 74,000 on SBS2 according to the official OzTam ratings system; less than a tenth of the viewership of the BBL.

i already see the pattern

'why dont you play in the winter so you can have no interest like us???'
'why dont you play on thursday and monday nights so you can have small attendances like us???'
'why dont you play at our suburban grounds and see how bad it is???'

its a pattern of excuses and excuses

3 clubs have folded since the a-leagues inception,2 of which were expansion teams, but more importantly the last 2 expansion sides - especially the wanderers - have been absolute success stories

if there are any franchises in australian sport that look like their head will be on the chopping block next it will be out of the raiders and titans! heck throw the roosters in there too ps not sorry!!!! LMFAO
