NORTH Melbourne AFL player Majak Daw has been charged with rape over an incident in 2007.

The 23-year-old ruckman was charged yesterday with three counts of rape over an alleged sexual assault at Altona North in 2007, three years before he joined the club as a rookie.

Daw, who has previously denied the allegations, will face court next month.

Announcing the charging of a 23-year-old Wyndham Vale man, police said as the matter was now before the court, it would be inappropriate to comment further.

North Melbourne said they would support Daw and he would remain available for selection at VFL and AFL level.

“The club respects the integrity of the legal process and asks the right to privacy of all involved be respected,’’ the club said in a statement.

“This is the subject of an ongoing legal proceeding and it is not appropriate for Majak

or North Melbourne to make any comment.”

Daw, the first Sudanese-born player to play AFL, and who has played 12 games with the Kangaroos, was first interviewed by police over the allegations in May.

He is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing on July

11.

AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon said the league would not bar Daw from playing, but would restrict his public appearances.

“Given the specific circumstances of the case, the AFL has determined that the player remains available for selection by his club,’’ Mr Dillon said.

“However, we will monitor the case and reserve the right to take action under our rules if deemed appropriate.

“Further, the AFL has determined that a restriction will be placed on the player’s AFL and club promotional and development duties.’’

Daw’s management, Elite Sports Properties, said any comment would be inappropriate.

“He is entitled to a presumption of innocence and we would ask that this and

the right to privacy of all involved be respected,” the ESP statement said.

But morons like yourself and your AFL loving mates are trying to score political points of the back of Todd Carney's childish prank instead of looking in your own back yard. One of your players - the latest - charged with rape. And look at the way the AFL are handling it - There bigger jokes than what you are.

Drugs are also a bigger problem in your sport because of this ridiculous joke called the 'three strikes policy', and racism is running rampart in your game - a game that harbors charged rapists. look in to the own NRL drug policy, where the NRL commission, left it up to the clubs to pay and test their own players
