Ports Traditional Black & White Jumper

Post by Beaussie »

Seems strange the AFL allows West Coast to wear black and gold yet Port are, it appears, set to be denied their request to wear their traditional black and white prison bar jumper for heritage round.

PORT Adelaide is confused - and becoming frustrated and angry.

The Power is still waiting on the AFL to decide if the Power can wear its traditional black-and-white prison bar jumper in heritage round in July.

Meanwhile, the league has approved West Coast wearing the WA state jumper, which resembles the Richmond jumper, in the 1970s-themed weekend.

The AFL intends to block Port's request to wear black and white in heritage round, saying those colours are exclusive to Collingwood.

But the blue-and-gold Eagles can be black and gold in heritage round without offending Richmond.

The Eagles, who were not formed until 1987, will wear a gold jumper with a black sash against Brisbane at Subiaco on July 7.

It is a replica of the WA jumper worn in the first state-of-origin match, on October 8, 1977, in which the Sandgropers beat Victoria by 94 points.

"We are not a state team - nor do we purport to be," West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett said yesterday.

Power chief executive John James last night described the AFL's approval of the West Coast jumper that has never been worn by the Eagles as "strange".

"We're struggling with the fact we are being treated differently than other clubs," James said.

"We need the whole concept of the heritage round cleared up - and for every club to work to the same parameters.

"Port Adelaide's history in the 1970s is the black-and-white prison bar jumper. That is our heritage. We are very keen for the AFL to allow us to celebrate that heritage like every other club can.

"We've had fruitful discussions with the AFL in the past week and look forward to a positive outcome."

Can someone post a pic of Port's traditional jumper?

From the sound of it, West Coast's jumper is the reverse of Richmond's (that is nothing like it), so I can't see the reason for the comparison.. :?

Not sure if this is the exact jumper design proposed for heritage round but I came across this on the NSW Power fans website.

Agreed. Just the AFL showing how scared they are of Collingwood. They wouldn't want to upset Eddie! lol

It's one match, it does not clash with the opposition in that game. Let them wear it IMO

Heritage round this season and all other heritage round matches at AAMI Stadium unless the match was against Collingwood which is unlikely anyway. Exactly what Eddie was demanding it seems.

The West Coast Eagles jersey for the heritage round is the same as our State of Origin jersey, its even go the Black Swan on the front, its only the colours that are the same as Richmond, but nothing else..

Also there is alot of controversey over the Eagles heritage round jersey in WA and its almost splitting the state in half...lets hope common sense prevails..
