Wow, first New Zealand and now Singapore. There would be huge potential for the NBL in Asia you'd think. Certainly provides more hope than in Australia at the moment. Good to see the NBL thinking outside of Australia, even if it will be sad to see the demise of the Hunter Pirates.

THE National Basketball League appears certain to have a team in Singapore next season, with the new franchise taking the place of the embattled Hunter Pirates.

There was no confirmation yesterday from the NBL, the Pirates or prospective new owners, but league sources say the NBL board, at a meeting in Sydney on Friday, gave its blessing to the transfer of the Hunter licence.

While a Gold Coast consortium was believed to be the frontrunner to replace the Pirates, they are targeting the 2007-08 season and appear to have been gazumped by an Australia-Singapore syndicate that intends to have a team on court this year.

It had been suggested entrepreneur and former coach Bob Turner put the deal together, but asked if he was involved, he said: "I wouldn't think so."

Like the Sydney Kings and Brisbane Bullets, Singapore no longer exists. The NBL is a shambles at the moment.

Great for Asia but for Australian fans, I don't think so. Keep it it local. I can respect that NZ are pretty much National but Singapore!
