ONE of the Brisbane Lions' two Irish recruits has quit and will go home today.
Brendan Quigley told the Lions he was homesick and would abandon his AFL dream.
Quigley and fellow Irish teenager Colm Begley were recruited last year and signed two-year international rookie contracts in October.
Outstanding junior Gaelic players, their defection to Australia inspired by Tadhg Kennelly's success with Sydney, sparked outrage in Ireland.
The Irish feared their top juniors would become the targets of AFL recruiters.
It was agreed the AFL would examine its international drafting rule and then present a proposal to the Gaelic Athletic Association.
Lions football manager Graeme Allan confirmed 19-year-old Quigley had quit.
"That's life," he said last night. "He's going home tomorrow. He's just homesick. No, he won't be coming back."
The 194cm Quigley was earmarked by the Lions as a potential key position player.
Quigley said late last year he was keen to make a career in the AFL.
"I have two years to prove myself. A lot can happen in two years and hopefully we'll (him and Begley) be listed," he said. "At home, I have to get up and be at work as an apprentice carpenter. Here, I get up in the morning and be a professional footballer."
Quigley hails from County Laois town Timahoe.
Begley is still training with the Lions.

Homesick Irishman Calls it Quits
What a shame. With the past success of Jim Stynes and more recently Tadhg Kennelly, I was really looking forward to seeing this Irish lad in action. Oh well Begely is still here I suppose.
