only a few months in from the announcement from the campaign socialist Albanese and snake oil salesman PV Landys happy to spend everybody's elses money except their own, to 600 million to base a NRL team in one of the most corrupt, dangerous and poor countries in the world thinking it will work

A powerful businessman has stood down from the board of Papua New Guinea's new NRL franchise amid corruption concerns relating to business dealings with a Chinese state-owned company.

The newly established board has been entrusted with overseeing more than $200 million in Australian government funding to set up PNG's new NRL team, which plans to join the rugby league competition in 2028.

PNG businessman Wapu Sonk led a successful campaign as chair of the PNG NRL bid in 2024, and was appointed as a director of the franchise board last month.

On Friday, PNG Prime Minister James Marape said Mr Sonk had agreed to step aside following corruption concerns reported in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The concerns surround business dealings related to Mr Sonk's role as managing director of PNG state-owned oil company Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL), and not the NRL franchise.

An official letter seen by the ABC shows KPHL insisted that Chinese state-owned company China Petroleum and Pipeline Engineering Corporation award a subcontract to an Australian company owned by Mr Sonk.

China Petroleum and Pipeline Engineering Corporation was awarded a contract to upgrade fuel storage facilities at a major wharf outside PNG's capital.

The letter suggests that failure to award the subcontracts could "compromise the project's overall success" and collaborative efforts between the Chinese Company and KPHL.

Australian School Boys Played Png School Boys Elite Level. And it ended up being a draw.
PNG can only improve going forward.
especially now going to the NRL and huge funding coming on board

Actually
I don't think the team will be a majority PNG players for a very long time , the pathways have been there for a decade & still we only have about 4 players born in PNG who currently play NRL , the PNG cutters QLD cup team ATM would get beaten by 60 points every week.
part of this 600 mill is improving the pathways but that will take time

the side will be mainly Australian players & they will go there because they will pay no tax( huge incentive), & live in essentially a resort.
As a result the team will be competitive from day 1

whats the chances of struggling to retaining them, the chances of the average local of ever leaving the Island is very low, what are the chances of soon as they get some attention, the PNG player deflecting to the main land for a safer life and more opportunities for his family, note schooling for starters for the children

that could most certainly happen.
this already happens with NZ players moving to Australia>>

the thing is PNG is massive, and footballers are everywhere>> they all wanna play..
the grassroots is huge, and will forever keep coming through..

so yes they may lose a fair bit of players but there will always be more waiting in line..

It will change but not any time soon
we're talking the 3rd world ,
pulling a society up out of centuries of poverty is no mean feat ... & its wonderful & highly flattering that our sport has been chosen to play a huge role in doing this.
