AFL legend Ron Barassi says he has no regrets about helping a woman during a street assault, following the conviction of the man who went on to attack him.

The former premiership player and coach, 75, was bashed after chasing and tackling Travis Bowling, having come to the aid of a woman hit in a St Kilda street.

"I interfered with what he (Bowling) was doing. What he was doing was pretty ordinary," Mr Barassi told AAP on Tuesday.

His comments came after Bowling, 29, was found guilty of intentionally causing serious injury to Mr Barassi and Tessa Green, to whose aid the former footballer came to in the early hours of January 1, 2009.

Police have arrested a man and are questioning a teenage girl over the New Year's Eve assault on AFL legend Ron Barassi.

A 25-year-old South Melbourne man was arrested this morning and a 15-year-old girl, also from South Melbourne, is currently speaking with police at St Kilda police station.

Barassi, 72, was bashed by a group of men after coming to the aid of Tess Green, 43, who was assaulted in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda just after midnight on New Year's Eve.
