Footy supremo Peter V'Landys has been forced into a humiliating retreat, announcing the NRL grand final will remain in Sydney despite publicly lobbying against the NSW Government since April.

The war began in April, when V'landys fired an ominous warning to Perrottet that rugby league's biggest showpiece could head to Queensland for a second consecutive year.

The NRL was at loggerheads with the state government over funding for suburban grounds, with V'landys openly critical of the decision to back down from a $800million upgrade of Accor Stadium.

It led to threats to take the 2022 grand final to Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium, but V'landys will now have his tail between his legs as he heads back to NRL HQ.

‘At an all-time low’: Twist as NRL’s ‘Super Bowl’ plan sparks $350m bombshell claim

There has been a twist after the NRL revealed its ‘Super Bowl’ plan to shop around the grand final, with $350 million in funding to a host of clubs reportedly at risk.

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo confirmed on Thursday that the decider would be played at NSW’s Accor Stadium despite suggestions it could be moved.

However, V’landys refused to confirm the grand final would stay in Sydney in the near-future, revealing the NRL could adopt an approach similar to the NFL Super Bowl.

“The NSW government has given it an additional investment, but this is only for one year, I have to stress that,” V’landys said.

“It is not for the long-term, negotiations will recommence for future grand finals, it has really now put it on the table for the future. It hasn’t been because we were hoping that we’d have an exclusive arrangement with the NSW government.

“Unfortunately, that is no longer the case, so it opens the door for a Super Bowl type concept or who can give us the best deal for the game.”

That has not gone down well with the NSW government according to Channel 9’s political reporter Chris O’Keefe, who said its relationship with the NRL is at an “all-time low”.

“Senior ministers right now are actively lobbying the Premier to pull funding for major rugby league funding as a direct result of not committing to holding the grand final in Sydney into the future,” O’Keefe said on Channel 9 on Thursday night.

“This places the $300 million for a brand-new stadium for the Penrith Panthers at risk. Ministers want Dominic Perrottet to kill this project off immediately.

“Plus, they want him to pull Centre of Excellence funding which will build state-of-the-art training facilities in Kellyville for the Parramatta Eels, Belmore for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Wollongong for the St. George Illawarra Dragons. That is $50 million these NRL clubs were banking on and now it is at risk.

“It is unclear if the Premier will listen to members of his cabinet and agree to pull these funds but there is no question the relationship between the NRL and the NSW Government is at an all-time low.”

It seems the AFL plays a lot on his mind. Whereas I don't think the NRL barely enters Gill's calculations.

Seriously, V'Landy's is always bringing up AFL - the Dolphin's discussion was in part rooted in how to stop the AFL spread. NRL people, including V'Landy's seem to constantly reference AFL. Even in these threads - there is an obsession about AFL - not from the AFL people, but the NRL people - even to the point of hating it. Not saying you in particular. I just don't see Gill or other AFL people having this level of concern for NRL or Union - may be soccer at world cup time a few years back - when soccer was seen as a potential threat maybe. The AFL being the biggest sporting body in Australia obviously sees a target on its head which is understandable. I just don't think the AFL see NRL as a threat whereas you are constantly reading about the AFL and Aussie rules being a threat to NRL grassroots etc. As I said, AFL lives rent free in V'Landy's head it seems, and many posters here too. I mean, to "hate" a sport - to fume over it - that's kinda of next level.

I think when you have one of the biggest announcements for your sport and you try to have a dig at another sport - I'd say that's living rent free in your head.

I would say it is a poor attempt at trying to deflect a massive backdown.

The only reason he keeps bringing it up is because he likes jokes. Yes, I agree, it is exactly the same for us. We enjoy a good joke and Gil and the AFL are jokes . Gil is a very amusing guy.

Clearly you wouldn't know a joke if it was a tragic accident for a barbed wire hurdler.

Gil doesnt even have to respond. Crowd on Sunday arvo for an in season home and away game will be more than likely be bigger than any attendance at any NRL Grand Final since 2001.
