NSW/NRL suburban grounds funding

Threats from V’Landys and NRL clubs are unlikely to sway the NSW government and fair enough when the state is broke and many people have lost their homes and businesses in the recent floods.

Yep, too right.

How many suburban grounds do the Wests Tigers want anyway? Campbelltown Stadium, Leichhardt Oval, Parramatta Stadium and Stadium Australia. Fund the ground improvements yourself NRL.

This coming from the follower of a scum sport that had 100 mill spent on the sydney showground for a team that couldn't fill a phone box

waste much ?
why didn't the aflol..... fund it themselves ?

The biggest vacume cleaners of tax payer monies for no return there is in australia
hypocrite fuckwits [-( [-( [-( [-( [-( [-(

the NRL has a written agreement with the NSW govt to upgrade homebush , not for the suburban grounds , that was a handshake. Both have been reneged on.
They'll always be someone bleating about something else the money could be spent on & they'll always be natural disasters , Vlandys job is ensure his sport is looked after & agreements honoured , not flood victims or underpaid teachers .. thats someone elses job.

the states biggest sport , by a mile ..will not be taken advantage of any longer

Ahh wrong as usual and the AFL contributed $10 million to the $45 million price tag of the redevelopment for a stadium owned by the NSW Government and operated by the Royal Agriculture Society for the benefit of the Easter Show and at the time events such as Big Day Out and other concerts along with benefiting the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash Cricket and soccer’s Western Sydney Wanderers. Did anyone of those tenants contribute a single dollar to the redevelopment? Nup, of course not.

Unlike the parasitic NRL, the AFL contributes its own funds to stadium developments and it’s why governments of all persuasions like to partner with the AFL to deliver better facilities for multiple stakeholders.

The NRL and V’Landy should take note.

GWS to play at revamped showgrounds

June 8, 2010

Greater Western Sydney will play their home games at a revamped Sydney Showgrounds when they enter the AFL competition in 2012 after a change of heart by the NSW government.

The bulk of the funding for the upgrade of the existing facility - believed to be $45 million - will be provided by the state government, with the AFL contributing a further $10 million.

Sydney Showground Stadium (Known commercially as GIANTS Stadium during the AFL Season)[5][6] is a sports and events stadium located at the Sydney Showground in Sydney Olympic Park. It hosted the baseball events for the 2000 Summer Olympics. The Showground, including the stadium, is operated by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS), under lease from the New South Wales Government.

The stadium hosts flagship events of the Sydney Royal Easter Show, such as the Grand Parade. The stadium is also used for sport. It is the primary home ground of the Australian Football League's Greater Western Sydney Giants and the home ground of the Big Bash League's Sydney Thunder. It was also the primary home ground of the A-League's Western Sydney Wanderers for 3 years starting with the 2016–17 A-League season. Events and festivals to have been held at the stadium include Soundwave, Big Day Out, Stereosonic and Big Exo Day.

the agreement is Sydney get's NRL GF and in return Governement funds upgrades.
in a long term deal..

AFL signed with the Victorian Government a long term deal and return have received

https://www.afl.com.au/news/137699/gf-a ... -mega-deal

THE MCG will be the home of the Grand Final until at least 2057 under a mega-deal with the Victorian government expected to be announced on Friday.

The agreement with premier Daniel Andrews' Labor government and the AFL is part of a broader sports package that will see $225million in investment in Etihad Stadium and the Docklands precinct.

The MCG's Great Southern Stand will be upgraded to ensure the ground's capacity is maintained above 100,000 as a state-of-the-art venue.

The sports package which is expected to total around $500million in funding overall is expected to include a revamp of other key facilities across the state – in part to enhance facilities for women's football - including:

- Ikon Park in Carlton
- Mars Stadium in Ballarat
- Casey Fields in Melbourne's south-east
- Whitten Oval in Footscray
- Victoria Park in Collingwood
- Moorabbin Oval

Any updates?

Political suicide for the struggling NSW Government to back down now I suspect.

Would NSW really care if the NRL GF went to Brisbane anyway? Is the QLD Government offering millions of taxpayer dollars for NRL stadiums and upgrades to secure the GF?

V’Landys starting to look and sound rather silly.

Still odd to think the NRL has to resort to free/cheap tickets for its Grand Final depending on the teams involved. Unheard of in the AFL.
Money talks - why the NRL grand final will be held in Sydney
Roy Masters
Sports Columnist

Watching Peter V’landys answer media questions on the stadiums fiasco, it is clear the ARLC chair is highly skilled at being elusive with interrogators, while appearing candid. But when he says the NRL grand final will likely be played in Sydney to honour an agreement with the NSW government, he is being selective with the truth.

The real reason the season decider will be played in Sydney, rather than Brisbane, is the ARLC makes more money staging it in Sydney.

Consider the maths. In pre-COVID-19 times, the range for high to low earning grand finals in Sydney was a profit of between $7 million and $11 million.

This range reflected the support of the two teams in the grand final. For example, a Storm versus Sea Eagles decider would yield less than the Dragons versus Eels.

Although both are sell outs at Homebush stadium, there would be a large number of free/low-priced tickets to the Storm-Sea Eagles grand final, while almost every ticket in the Dragons-Eels would be an A class ticket, meaning high-priced.

Pre COVID -19, there was also an annual $4 million payment from the NSW government to secure the grand final in Sydney.

From 2019 onwards, the NSW Government stopped paying the fee because of a signed agreement with the ARLC to make a significant spend on new stadiums in Sydney. However, in order to compensate for the loss of the $4m, the NRL financial boffins negotiated a charge to each of the Homebush stadium gold pass members reserving seats. Up to 2018, the NRL received nothing from the 15,000 to 20,000 gold pass holders. Assuming 90 per cent of these seats are occupied at 75 per cent of ticketed face value, it adds $3 million to $5 million to the profit range. This increases the range of low and high yielding grand finals to $10 million -$16 million.

It is extremely unlikely the 52,000 seat Suncorp stadium in Brisbane would exceed a profit of $5 million to $7 million. Therefore, taking the midpoint of the Sydney range ($13 million) and the midpoint of the Brisbane range ($6 million), the Queensland government would need to offer minimum support of $7 million to win the grand final. Given that the Queensland Premier Palaszczuk copped flak last year when she outlaid $4.6 million to secure the Panthers versus Rabbitohs grand final in Queensland, she may be reluctant to bid. And why would she pay $7 million when there is no alternative bidder?

The reality is the grand final is likely to be in Sydney because that’s where it makes the most money, but V’landys says it’s all about honouring a deal with the NSW government.

The cited deal is, in fact, a formalised heads of agreement negotiated during the previous administration and signed by both the state government and the NRL.

The deal that V’landys bleats is being breached is a subsequent handshake agreement with the NSW government to divert $800 million of funds allocated to the reconfiguration of the Homebush stadium to suburban stadia.

What top sporting administrators rely on handshake deals with politicians?

And further undermine the chances of the stadium upgrades proceeding by announcing the purchase of a $25 million hotel in Brisbane at a time floods have devastated homes in Lismore, just two hours south?

V’landys has achieved solidarity with the chairmen of the Sydney NRL clubs by funding them generously, mostly at the expense of junior development. But this unity has now weakened. Wests Tigers ask why the $300 million quarantined for the Panthers re-development shouldn’t go to flood relief if Leichhardt receives nothing. To be fair, these stadium upgrades don’t exclusively benefit rugby league and these arenas are in need of refurbishment. This was demonstrated Saturday when a stand collapsed at Leichhardt Oval during a rugby union match between St Josephs College and Riverview attended by 15,000 fans.

V’landys has been exceptional at winning support of government and business, beginning with his successful High Court action to win a product licensing fee from online bookies; funds from the federal government to assist the recovery from the equine flu virus and clearing all the regulatory hurdles to have the NRL play on during COVID-19. But as chief executive of Racing NSW, how will his paymasters feel if Perrottet starts treating their sport the same way at rugby league? After all, V’landys has lost two of his biggest supporters in cabinet – the former deputy premier John Barilaro and his successor, Stuart Ayres.
He has also taken legal action against the NSWRL and the QRL are hostile to his plans for a national reserve grade competition.

Surely, V’landys, of proud Greek heritage, understands the meaning of hubris.

Ha ha on you. The work has already started at Whitten Oval, and Eureka Stadium (I don't use the sponsor names) is not just about the ALF. It'll host T20 cricket in 2026 at the Commonwealth Games as well so capacity needs to be raised.

this in my opinion is what will occur.

NRL will agree to hold GF in SYDNEY long term>>

Government will agree to redevelop stadiums across sydney, ( though instead of beginning straight away or next few years for completition

Some stadiums will be put on the back burner and upgraded in time (just not now) because of the budget blow out

There's an election early next year - I suspect that if they don't get off their butts, voters will kick them.
