Reports that Paramount had lowballed the AFL and offered less than even the current deal are not understood to be accurate, according to sources. But Paramount co-boss Beverley McGarvey told this masthead a reported $600 million figure was not correct.

More AFL games are likely to end up behind a paywall in the next broadcast deal, regardless of which party wins the bid for the AFL rights.

Sources familiar with discussions said that the AFL is being asked to consider some home team games behind a paywall in Western Australia and South Australia – there are none in the current deal – and potentially some in the developing markets of NSW and Queensland.

A further factor for the broadcast bidding is the potential entrance of a 19th team, in the form of Tasmania, should that be approved. Tasmania would provide a further 11 games for the broadcasters and the bidders have been asked to cover the possibility of a 19th team in their pitches.

After watching 7 news Sydney tonight, I honestly don’t care if Channel 10/Paramount offer slightly less than the joint Foxtel/7 bid and win the entire rights.

Channel 7 is fucked. A sellout SCG this weekend for 2nd vs 4th and yet not once mentioned on the Sydney news tonight. Pretty standard for Channel 7 the so called home of footy and major sponsor of the Swans. Fuck them, at least Channel 10 promoted the game in Sydney on their nightly news when they had the broadcast rights and games were always shown on their primary channel. The game needs exposure in NSW/ACT and QLD and that doesn’t happen on Channel 7.

Channel 10 also offers more flexibility.
In pitching as a one-company bid, Paramount offers the AFL fixturing flexibility, such as the ability to change a particular game from pay to free-to-air, or vice-versa, at short notice. This is harder to do when there are two separate rights holders.

I would need to check if it's still the case, but don't Channel 7 have the right to make the last bid?

McLachlan takes the (very large) cake

Happy birthday to outgoing AFL boss Gillon McLachlan, who celebrated his 49th birthday on Monday with a Paramount-themed cake delivered by the US entertainment giant.

Paramount is one of a group of companies (including Seven West Media, Foxtel and Nine Entertainment Co, the owner of this masthead) bidding for the broadcast rights to the AFL and AFLW once the current contract expires in 2024. The cake was just a sweetener on top of a multimillion-dollar bid offered by Paramount.

McLachlan is a Leo twin with the company, which also sent cupcakes, balloons and other delights to Australian media this week to celebrate its streaming service’s first birthday.

A picture of McLachlan cutting into an oversized Paramount cake – so big it fed up to 100 AFL staff – surfaced on social media with a “happy birthday”. We wonder what he wished for. Perhaps that a reported bid of $600 million – which Paramount boss Beverley McGarvey claims was “plucked from thin air” – was actually made?

It was there on the last deal in 2015 (not including the renegotiation in 2020 for the extra two years to 2024).

another good point to add. (Could AFL afford to lose FOX FOOTY)
FOX FOOTY is such a big asset to leave

I'm pretty sure whatever deal is cut it will include Fox Sports. Kayo on the other hand have plenty to worry about and I think rightly so. In my experience, Kayo absolutely sucks.

Likely svenerio is a Fox and 7 deal with changes. Is possible that something out of the box occurs - but it will need big dollars to force that to happen.
