The Swans have taken over Rugby League for popularity on Sydney’s north shore, eastern suburbs and inner west. That’s massive.

The AFL and the Giants need to drop the bloody ridiculous GWS name and just be called Western Sydney and focus on bloody Western Sydney. It will take time just like the Swans to build up a loyal supporter base and strong membership. Talk of home games at the SCG for the Giants is more stupid thinking. Tony Shepherd what were you thinking even entertaining that thought bubble? SCG and Venues NSW conflict of interest perhaps Tony?
The GWS name I never liked, wasn’t fond of the giants either, but with that established…they didn't establish themselves very well. Lost their identity…more confident of the Suns survival than the giants. Need to re-establish themselves as Western Sydney…and stay there.
Yep, the GWS name was silly. Cringeworthy even, when you hear commentators say it and totally unrelatable to potential new fans I suspect. I have heard it was apparently based on local councillors suggesting Western Sydney alone would alienate potential fans in South West Sydney and North Western Sydney. And the AFL wanted to appeal to the entire greater western Sydney as well as southern NSW and Canberra. Funny that, as I remember going to many Sydney Swans games in Canberra, Albury and Wagga Wagga and the Sydney name was never an issue with big crowds attending, most in red and white.

Just look at the AFL ladder too on various sites including the AFL official site. Who the hell is the GWS Giants when every other club is so easily identifiable by their locations. A marketing failure that needs to be fixed and it’s an easy fix to change the name. Other issues need addressing too, regarding player retention and development and I think the fixturing has also been problematic. To many games in Canberra along with issues with the Royal Easter Show and not trying to capitalise on that period with games played at Stadium Australia, even if it means handing out heaps and I mean heaps of free tickets to show attendees, to build awareness and potential new fans - particularly junior fans. A lot of work to do, but this was always going to be a long term thing.

a fumbler myth , there is no part of sydney that RL has been taken over by anything in
yawnion is stronger in the east & north shore then it is in the west , but miles behind RL still
same as derpball

The Old North Sydney bears axing in 1999 was harmful to RL, but their fans have mainly chosen to follow nothing at all
the ratings for the swines prove ( can't outrate kids cartoons ) there are hardly any fans anywhere in Sydney let alone a large congregation in the nthn part of sydney which has well in excess of 1 million residents

And it's partly why I call them West Sydney on my website.

We’ve been over this before.

Yet, while the AFL has undeniably made inroads into rugby's turf at a grassroots level, it's in the professional realm where it is has really pulled away.

The Swans average attendances, TV ratings and memberships long ago surpassed those of the Waratahs and now completely dwarf them. And the eastern suburbs and north shore (as well as the Hills district and Sutherland shire) are among the strongest areas for Swans members and fans, according to membership data viewed by the Herald.

In the end - ratings don't really matter when it comes to revenue. It's bums on seats that counts.

Beau - my site is on my profile. I think I can put that and not cause fits for those who claim I should put a link here and be pedantic in the process.

A well known fact in your little world which may not be all that factual.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.
