There is a bit of a difference between the popularity of the codes/leagues and their respective clubs, but in Qld I’d say both the AFL and the lions should be ranked 2nd….The Dolphins may well eclipse them but it is a bit early to tell.

though AFL just pumps money into QLD like there is no tomorrow.
which makes AFL clubs stand on there two feet.
(which makes them look bigger to say UNION)

UNION is actually quite popular in QLD at grassroots levels.
it fails at the top, and has limited resources
REDS made 5.5mill profit last year.

NRL does not really pump anything into QLD
it is just naturally strong and the clubs are strong at NRL level and QRL

Rugby Union certainly struggles on the Gold Coast - Aussie Rules has a very strong following and many levels in their competitions. I think Rugby Union has to join in on the Brisbane leagues given lack of clubs - this was the case of fees years back anyway.

The only place that would play Rugby on the Gold Coast would be TSS because its a private school that plays in the GPS Rugby competition which is actually pretty big.

RED AVG Attendance in 2021 was 20k
There latest report pumped up Sponsorship and hospitality as there big winners for profit in the recent financial year.

Certainly the 2022 season attendance was well below 20,000. Hard to tell as they don't release all the figures.
2023 looks worse…and less attendance figures are being released.

The Broncos will always be the biggest & most popular sporting club in QLD. I think the Lions are second though when 15 years ago the Reds would have come in second. The reds are pretty much irrelevant now just like Rugby Union is.

But the fixture clash with the NRL is also a test for the AFL, which has discussed with pride in the past month the foothold it is establishing in the northern state. At the season launch at the Malthouse theatre early in March, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan declared the code was on the verge of becoming the biggest in Queensland.

McLachlan said “we know we need [to build] an oval a week, every week, to cater for that growth” of Australian rules football in the sunshine state. We are seeing [participation] numbers lifting above pre-Covid levels, particularly in Queensland where AFL, within a year or two, is on the brink of being the biggest code in the state,” McLachlan said. “[That is] something unthinkable a decade ago.”
