The Herald reports about 150,000 viewers whilst Media Week has 97,000 tuning into the Super Rugby launch on 9Gem on Friday night.
While Stan work out a solution, both Nine and Rugby Australia executives were thrilled with the audience that tuned in for the Reds’ record-breaking win against the Waratahs.
The Herald has learned the match was watched by about 200,000 people across 9Gem and Stan Sport. About 150,000 of those viewers tuned in on Nine’s secondary channel and the other 50,000 watched via Stan’s new streaming arm.
Combined, the numbers tripled the total viewership for the corresponding match in the first round last year.
“Friday night’s launch of Rugby on both Stan Sport and 9Gem was hugely successful, exceeding all expectations,” Nine director of sport Brent Williams said.

Whatever way you look at it,
through two access points, GEM AND STAN
to only get 200k for the opening game between the two biggest states for Union, is not good.
12k in attendance also, Ouch.

Worrying early signs in Sydney for rugby and new broadcaster Nine/Stan?
The Waratahs show isn’t rating and, in 2021, that’s the big problem

Having invested in the game as a growth project the state of the Sydney market is self-evidently a concern for them. And it should be.
In Australia’s biggest metro market, just 29,000 Sydneysiders watched the Waratahs lose to the Reds in round one on free-to-air TV.

lol Fred
i can safely say you are in a bubble..
SUPER RUGBY TOURNAMENT was suspended March Last Year. 2020
Australian teams have not played NZ or South African teams since (that is 14 months now)
Since than NZ has played Domestic only in NZ
And Australia has done the same thing.
A tournament between NZ and AUS Is maybe starting in a 1-2 months depending... international borders.

Looks like the final will be broadcast live on Channel 9 in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra, whilst shown on 9GEM in the rest of the country. The final will be up against Melbourne vs Sydney in the AFL on Channel 7 in Sydney and 7mate in Brisbane. Surely a big ratings winner in Brisbane. Ratings will be interesting indeed.
TV Guide: Super Rugby AU and Aotearoa 2021 finals on Stan Sport and Nine
ByMediaweekPosted on May 7, 2021
After a season packed with contests, both the Super Rugby AU and Aotearoa 2021 seasons culminate in a double-header this Saturday night, as dual-code superstar Sonny Bill Williams also makes his rugby commentary debut for Stan Sport and Nine.
From 5.00pm AEST, New Zealand’s Super Rugby Aotearoa competition concludes with the Crusaders, hunting for their record 11th Super Rugby title, facing off against the Chiefs at Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch – ad-free, live and on-demand exclusively on Stan Sport.
While Crusaders will enter as favourites, it was the Chiefs that claimed the last victory between the two in a one-point victory.
Following this at 7.00pm AEST on Channel 9 (Sydney/Brisbane/Canberra), 9Gem (rest of country) and on Stan Sport with extended coverage before and after the game, the top two teams of the Super Rugby AU season will do battle to crown a winner, as the Queensland Reds host the ACT Brumbies.
