Double headers will return to football next season with the AFL yesterday announcing a dual fixture during the opening round of the pre-season Wizard Cup.
Collingwood and Richmond, who recently began the home-and-away season but have been replaced in 2005 by a Brisbane Lions v St Kilda match, will kick off the pre-season competition with a Friday night clash at Telstra Dome.
The next day, the Docklands venue will host a rare double feature when the Western Bulldogs host Sydney, followed by Hawthorn v St Kilda. Not since the mid-1980s have the AFL scheduled double headers, but with stadiums at a premium in the summer, the concept is back for at least that one day.
Once again, pre-season cup matches have been scheduled in Canberra, Hobart, Cairns and Darwin.
