True Melbourne Storm are a great run Team in all aspects,

I think the NRL and the Melbourne Storm have truely failed in 1 main critera.

building grassroots and academy's in Victoria.

I recan GWS and the AFL did more work in 5 years than the NRL and the Storm have done in 20 years.

and i am not talking about popularity, i am talking about ground work.
They can be as good and as successful as they want but attracting fans and interest

All those years of being successful! Can’t wait to see the down turn of fans when they aren’t successful

True Terry not a great year for the drafting of Nsw young fellas but it is hardly indicative ... if we get two or three then maybe a major concern ...

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.the ... 53fzb.html

But as pointed out there are plenty of qld and nsw people playing on afl lists so not like there are no grassroots ... as you pointed out ... aussie rules is played at decent levels right actions the country with numerous clubs right across the country both senior and junior. Rl cannot day that ... it is largely confined to nsw and qld here. I think this is the area to focus on for rl ... getting people to play the game ... and as you say there is some growth but from a very very low base indeed. I would guess there are likely more Aussie rules clubs in Sydney then the whole of Victoria, south Australia and tassie combined ... I’m not sure tassie even has a team/comp.

But if they can get that growing then the sky’s the limit I guess .. but as it is a lot of people still call league rugby ... so a long way to go. But I do agree the arl/nrl has seemed to have got their house in order of late ... and I think Gil is not half the administrator of his predecessor... which has seem the afl go back a little I feel.
Bottom line Phred: fumblehouse has poured hundreds of millions $$$$$ into NSW. The NRL has given Vic peanuts. For Australia's biggest state to provide zero, zilch, nought and nil draftees in any given year is a disaster.

If a company pumped the same amount of money into a product for the same result the CEO & board would be laughed outta town.

You of course will have a different view. The dear leader cannot be wrong. Ever.

In nsw or Qld despite strong leagues all
Over those states right up to the top end of Australia

Where as league so few teams a a few comps with little amount of players

All the stats back it up as well!

What gibberish is this .
I have never ever stated that no one plays in qLD or nSW ( I think in amongst that gibberish you were saying afl ),
So once again you rant against a strawman argument .
Feel free to show where I have ever claimed that .

Now stick to the fucking topic .
Melb Storm is doing just fine for a team in an afl mad city .
Each year the membership & crowd average grow ..might be small growth but they grow .
It eats you up that they have carved out a following .

To be honest - I am a bit gobsmacked you'd think RL (outside Storm) has any real presence in Victoria. When you are in melbourne or victoria next see if you can spot a kid playing RL at school, a RL club/ground on the side of the road, kids throwing a rL ball at a park? They are meant to be getting a new sports excellence centre which will be good in Broadmeadows - which is fitting lol.
Fred your delusional if you think Baseball had more fans in Victoria than League.

Tell me Fred, why is the Victorian Baseball League not being shown on prime time tv in Victoria if it has so many players, followers and so much interest??

Freddy Fake News should be your name.

Melbourne entered a hastily combined competition the following year under News' ownership, and won the 1999 grand final. But it was losing up to $10 million annually, and was later estimated to have cost News $75 million in 15 years.

Running costs of an nrlol team is far less than an afl team :(/

Expansion isn’t cheap! The afl can pull it off in non heartland territory and nrlol doesn’t have the money, despite all its pokes and government hand outs
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus
ARU $27 million
NRLOL $25 million

The problem is that whilst storm are a successful team the expansion of rl into Melbourne has not really happened. I think there has been a change in the later half re focus on grass roots but even then there has been little growth. I think this is the issue for rl in Australia in non traditional areas .... it is largely confined to those areas and with afl expanding into these areas with more people playing, more clubs and more teams then it becomes a shrinking market locally. A saving grace may be the decline in Union however seems afl is filling that upper class void well enough but the similarities in game would obviously see some go over the rl.

But again, you could have a very successful club but unless you are growing the game at grass roots which is a key kpi, really one of the main points of expanding, then is it really a success.

To illustrate a point ... reguarly made by the rl folk here... GWS are reasonably successful but it is derided by rl people for not having any local support .... that people in the area dont know who they are or care. I would agree that if gws was successful for the next 20 years, whilst they may garner a niche market with locals over that time, if they had not grown aussie rules in the area substantially then would they have been truely successful
