Re: RL Icon suggests saving the NRL by reducing it to twelve teams!
Interesting thoughts from Joey. I like the idea of another brissie side and possibly another nz team. I don’t think Perth would fly tbh.
I don’t mind his idea about the strongest survive but think it’s not really viable to just let teams die in the dust. You gotta respect tradition. I’ve always thought it would be cool to have a setup like the epl where the bottom two clubs bow out to the lower division and the top two in lower divisions come up... but I don’t think we have the financial setups for that to work in practice....

Re: RL Icon suggests saving the NRL by reducing it to twelve teams!
He knows the sport but has no idea when it comes to fans and business.
Without Expansion clubs like Melbourne and Brisbane would never have existed.
If the NRL cut 4 teams, it would lose so many fans. Phil Gould has the best knowledge in the game when it comes to running clubs. And is talking of a two team expansion. Qld, Perth or New Zealand as locations for the two new clubs.

It’s 8 years in and, well, the AFL def ain’t getting any bang for their buck with gws. It’s more like a thud, than a bang. The kind of thud one might hear when a 30tonne Sack of shit hits the earth after being dropped from a light aircraft.

Their crowds!King-Eliagh wrote: Mon May 06, 2019 7:16 amthe few giants fans there are are predominantly made up of people who were swans fans or have spent time enjoying AFL from other states outside of nsw and qld. I’d love to see some evidence of real growth in their fan base. Far as i can see years of pumping in millions of
and subsequent on field improvements has seen little to no crowd increases at games.

If you think their fans travel to the giants home games from out side of nsw and Qld, it’s definitely a case of your in a strong case of denial

Re: RL Icon suggests saving the NRL by reducing it to twelve teams!
funny how NRL is drawing up a blue print for expansion around Australia (especially in QLD)
and 3 QLD teams are having a shocking year.. close to worse on record.
I think it is more the reason to expand>>>
if Broncos have a bad year.. like we are seeing..
the 2nd team hopefully plays good.. so the city and media can at least pump up one team..
(abit like how 2 team cities (port and crows) and (West Coast and Freo)

Re: RL Icon suggests saving the NRL by reducing it to twelve teams!
it's not all up side. At the moment your average crowds benefit greatly from a single club in a big city. Introducing a new club will take fans away from the Broncos so instead of averaging 35k they'll average 25k. If that doesnt happen the new club will have shocking crowds.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Mon May 06, 2019 5:11 pmfunny how NRL is drawing up a blue print for expansion around Australia (especially in QLD)

Ratings will take a hit too unless the new clubs are never shown on FTA.
This is what happened in the AFL when they introduced new clubs. The lions crowds dropped by 9k per game in 2011. The number of rounds were kept the same so large heartland clubs played each other less often, and local v local team crowds were less common.
Expansion is good but is not reflected in average ratings or crowds

but i see way more positives than negatives for expanison in Brisbane than not having it..
Derby games and ratings a sure winner.
and expansion In IPSWICH or REDCLIFFE
are 40mins from city centre of brisbane.
interesting times.
