Hasn’t it been answered AFLcrap ? I read the article and explained to you what the article said? Afl ant going to be an Olympic sport but the article did postulate the craziness of the olympics picking weird sports and some bloke thought maybe an abridged version could get a run in 20 years ... the reporter rightly points out this is pie in the sky stuff.

The AFL 's past record at winning silver medals is 2nd to none. With the shanghai Olympics scheduled for 2032, I can see no reason why Gilligan shouldn't be the flag bearer. Think of all the people they could fit underneath the stadium. This would be one of the most watched Olympic event ever. And who knows? AFL could even become a gold medal winning sport.

Australian Football international would have to make a formal submission to the Olympic committee for footy 9s to be considered as a new Olympic sport
The AFI has not yet announced any plans to submit such relevant applications and have only expressed interest in having footy 9s in the Olympics.
If we are talking a 20 year time frame then it's very possible at some point an application will be submitted and approved, pie in sky stuff but possible, so fingers crossed.
Olympics has many crazy sports.
Google crazy Olympic sports, many lists to look at.
Why not footy 9s, may not be widely known but at least it is not crazy !
