Entire NRL club squad banned from local nightspot

Post by Beaussie » Fri Jan 11, 2019 11:23 pm

Patrick Smith and what he once famously said comes to mind here.
"Anybody who dares suggest that rugby league is not a culture to
despise, then they are just as stupid and boorish as the offending players".

Cronulla Sharks squad barred from sailing club after fracas
By Chris Barrett
11 January 2019

Cronulla’s entire squad has been barred by one of the Sutherland Shire’s most popular nightspots as a result of a late-night incident that the Sharks and police are investigating.

The Herald can reveal Cronulla Sailing Club has taken the extraordinary step of telling the area’s NRL club that their players are no longer welcome there.

The blacklisting comes after an altercation on the night of December 21 in which a series of scuffles are understood to have broken out across the venue involving lower-grade players, prompting police to be called.

The Sharks have been investigating the incident since before Christmas and are yet to determine whether to begin disciplinary proceedings with any players.

The action taken by the sailing club – which, like the Sharks, is considered an institution in the Shire – has led to speculation that the episode may have been more serious than a fracas involving lower-graders. The Herald has been told there were also first-grade players at the sailing club on the night who did not intervene.

Sharks chief executive Barry Russell said on Friday the club was treating it “very seriously”.

“I can confirm there was an incident, which is being investigated by the club. The club has informed the [NRL] integrity unit and is working with police with their investigation,” he said. “We will take the appropriate action once the investigation is concluded.”

Cronulla Sailing Club licensee Ken McKay, a former NSW Police Assistant Commissioner, was also tight-lipped about what transpired at his venue before Christmas.

“There will be no comment from the Cronulla Sailing Club as there is a current and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Licensing Police at Cronulla as well as an investigation being conducted by the CEO at the Sharks,” McKay said in a text message.

The banning of the whole playing group by a licensed venue is the latest episode in a tumultuous off-season for Cronulla. The incident at the sailing club occurred two days after coach Shane Flanagan was deregistered and the Sharks were fined $800,000 by the NRL after the governing body found he had breached the terms of his 12-month suspension in 2014 with his communications with the club that year.

John Morris, who was an assistant coach under Flanagan, has since been named interim coach while Flanagan prepares a response to the claims against him. Flanagan has until the end of January to lodge his submission.

The club is also awaiting the outcome of an NRL salary cap investigation into the Sharks after Russell last year reported to head office potential breaches of the rules involving third-party deals.

"One in every 24 Australians is now a member of an AFL club, a sign that the national reach of Australian football has never been greater," League CEO Gillon McLachlan said.

Finally an Afl fan actually having a go! Well done beaussie!! =D and Jesus about bloody time. I noticed there were many stories about nrl player misdemeanours during the month of December and not one of our feeble Afl supporters was up in arms and able to post something for tfc. A hopeless bunch we have at the moment really.

Anyway beaussie I have two things to say.

This Patrick fella you quote? He sounds like he had a square silver spoon rammed up his a-hole from an early age. I decided to read the Australian the last few months and for the most part it’s vile far right wing journos spouting disgraceful anger filled hatred toward anything outside their narrow bounds.

And secondly the article you quote really gives us nothing much does it  the Cronulla sailing club eh? Sailing clubs have long been accommodating a very white wealthy crowd, in fact you’d probably find sailing clubs very safe spaces for Afl recruiters to discuss their one racist policies without fear of anyone batting an eyelid or opposing so I’d be worried that some of the junior rugby league players experienced some racism or who knows, accidentally walked in on an Afl recruiters convention and all hell broke loose.

We will just have to wait and see how this story unfolds. But jolly good all the same. Finally an Afl fan is having a go!

Meatheads aren’t so bad. Racists on the other hand? Scum of the earth and the afl is teeming with em.

It's great news that now the patrons at one of the most popular clubs in the shire can go there with out the danger of getting their heads smashed in from their local NRL Team.

B.the Vic police look after afl & its players .

Lets not forget the secret 'Memorandum Of Understanding' the AFL had with the Victorian Police.

https://www.smh.com.au/national/afl-dep ... 16hdq.html

Here's a couple of the main points of the MOU:

'The AFL's secret police deal on league identities made the sporting body a criminal investigator and urged police to stay quiet about it.'

'The uncensored contract, obtained by AAP on Tuesday, states that Victoria Police could not comment on its own investigations into any AFL player, coach, board member or even staff without consulting the league.'

'The police-AFL "relationship" was struck so both could investigate "any criminal activity that would be prejudicial to the interests of the AFL", the contract says.'

'The AFL are basically given the role of deputy sheriff," he told AAP on Tuesday.

He said the "gag clause" also appears to have silenced an officer's freedom to speak publicly solely to protect corporate interests.'

Interesting stuff. And now we have self confessed hush money in play. The NRL has undoubtedly had a horrendous off season of player behaviour but at least we bring everything out into the open & hold people and clubs accountable.

The AFL on the other hand are the kings of deception, cover-ups, obfuscation and out and out lies.

How typical of the NRL flogs here! Distraction and deflection.

"Hey, look over there!!!"

This thread is about players of an NRL behaving so poorly the entire club is banned from an establishment. As far as I'm aware this is unprecedented in Australian sport and a national embarrassment

What deflection ?
We have addressed the issue .
I say ban them
Terry says it's a horrendous off season .
This is not deflecting .
We have highlighted the differences in the codes .
One has it's off field issues exposed & talked about .
The other has multiple layers to hide any negative issues .

Nothings been proven yet Afl fans seem to be jumping at conclusions.

If the nrl players were provoked I say the band should be for the provokers not the nrl players. Many people think it’s a right of passage to take on an nrl player in a fight. These dickheads deserve to go down, not the nrl players
