Looks like onelawyer issuggestibg jail time for what occurred at the west coast game yest. Something like that may well be needed to finally put a stop to the cowardly behaviour.

Aflcrap is right. We have to consider the coward punch a part of AFL culture. I mean how can one not considering it happens, with differing degrees of aggression and wounding, quite often in comparison to the other codes. I would confidently state that the % of AFL players who have resorted to a coward punch far exceeds the % of Australian men who would have done the same.

So we should talk about why? Is it just their heroes of the past lethal Leigh Matthews looked like he enjoyed nothing more than sneaking up behind some unsuspecting innocent and belting em in the head with an elbow, fist or forearm. I think the man they called god the much revered Ablett senior wasn’t much better. The list goes on with numerous players doin it in each decade. Is it the fact the game is played in a more 360 degree dimension than the other codes and thus the players become accustomed to not facing and smacking opposition from behind? I think perhaps. Is it the niggle the game has always had? Maybe. But I also think it’s quite cultural. Look at how the game reveres villains. Barry hall? Leigh Matthews? They were mammoth cowards and continue to be revered by the AFL media and public. They work commentating the game and are held in high esteem by the AFL community. Same with king Carey and others. You simply don’t see the nrl holding John Hopoate in the same light.
