No debate is needed here, a tv network executive has said what we all knew was already the reality.

Explaining the importance of scoring to the economics of the television broadcast - which, combining Foxtel and Seven, funds more than 60 per cent of AFL revenue - Worner said: "I want more goals ... That's the most valuable 30 seconds of screen real estate in Australian television, aside from the 30 seconds after an over.'' The aside was a reference to Seven's recent acquisition of the free-to-air rights to broadcast the cricket.

Worner, the chief executive of Seven West - arguably the AFL's most important partner - called for "beauty'' to be brought back into AFL football and expressed hope that closer games in the remainder of the season would boost ratings that had fallen this year[20%].


Worner said: "I want more goals ... That's the most valuable 30 seconds of screen real estate in Australian television, aside from the 30 seconds after an over.''

Worner also said that there were rules that could be changed to improve the look of the AFL games, potentially including restrictions on coaches, zones and 16-a-side.

Worner said he understood it was not the role of coaches to concern themselves with the spectacle and they weren't to blame for ugly footy.

So he's realised he's bought a dud .
A mess of a game that gets absolutely smashed by its rival in the ratings each year.

Not sure how any of that is relevant to this thread topic and the full quote I did provide from Mr Worner?

That aside, perhaps you could lead by example and provide the full context of what Mr Worner was saying regarding ratings.

Worner explained that the ratings had been lower, in part because they had been significantly higher last year compared with 2016 due to an "incredible number'' of close games, while the clash with the Commonwealth Games and Royal Wedding - which had massive ratings - had further dented AFL numbers.

"I believe if we get a string of close games, you'll see the numbers come up. If we can get Collingwood firing, that helps.''

He said a successful Swans team also helped ratings. "If you get a close game, people pile into it.''

Where after 20 years there's still animosity ...with blaming events that had no personal impact on clubs or fans ..no nothing .
Fans could still watch their teams ..if they learnt how to use a remote that Is.

So tell me what effects are still there once the com games or RL wedding was over .
What is the excuse for dismal ratings week after week long after a very minor inconvenience .

Great thread. Beaussie I think it's important, when arguing for AFL supremacy, to not select articles which don't suggest the AFL game is in crisis and highlight the "ugly"

Yep another Bea fail ..to go with his already impressive list of fails.
Looking at that article it's clear what is meant

I've outlaid a shitload of $$$for a product that is an ugly mess that people are turning off in droves.
So I expect GIl to change the rules so there's more add breaks (good luck GIl with teaching the uncos to kick straight ) so I can recoup some of the $$$ I've overpaid for this mess .

With little than a few adverts a half

They knew which was the most valuable TV game .
Hence packer & Murdoch went to war to own it .

because their deal included SOO. Because a larger proportion of their games are in or near prime time. Because Sydney is the most expensive advertising market in Australia
