Another Myth busted
Myths and milestones in the history of Australian sport!
by Stephen Wagg
A shitload of co-authors , all with pages of qualifications.
I will just give you the AFL rundown.
Myths and milestones in the history of Australian sport!
In the late 1800's .AFL/VFL showed little resemblance to what it is today. Scrummaging played more of a role in the game than marks.
The VFL/AFL very racist and full of fairy tales nothings much has changed. In one instance a team had an aboriginal player. The team refused to play with him claiming he smelled.
It is made very clear that the so called 'Australian game' has very British roots.
More BS from the AFL brigade. What else would you expect

Given Australia didn’t exist as a country when it was invented and given Victoria was a British colony .... of course it has British influences. I’m not really sure what this post is trying to achieve? How did you come across this “book” ?

Very hard to read on my phone. The little I read was starting about the myth that Australian Rules was influenced by Gaelic football ... which the book I think contests is the myth and is indeed very British.... where Irish and British appear to mean Protestant and Catholic ... which if anyone has studied the politics of the time, was a major thing almost akin to what was happening in Ireland at the time. The two did not mix nor like one another. There were revolutionaries akin to terrorists fighting the fight ... which if you were to look at the first “terror” attack in Australia on Prince Albert I believe ... was a Protestant clergyman who saw royalty as the enemy.

I don't see any British influences. 100% Irish. I heard a lot of Irish were part of the creation of the AFL game in the early days.

I think it's clear then! We and the author are all in agreement!!

AFL is definitely not authentically 'the Australian game' as the AFL and its ignorant supporter base refer to it as.
could we just then call it 'the British game that never took hold in Britain, or Europe, or anywhere else in the world bar southern australia'?? I know it's a bit of a wordy description but it's definitely accurate!

English would probably be insulted to be associated with such a game like AFL.
Rugby codes, Football & Cricket are the only codes you could say are truly British.

I think you're dead right NRL NFL, so insulted that they never bothered to look sideways at the code, even tho it was developed by their expat countrymen in one of their colonies

Yeah most would not even no it exists and those that have seen it would not understand it or care for it.

Dropping the "southern" bit would be much closer to the mark.
You say-
It never took off anywhere but Australia.
I say-
Possession is nine tenths of the law.
The name suits I feel.
"Australian Football League" number One in all the major indices a league is measured.
Do you leaguers gather to "Dutch rudder" each other to "come" up with these tugfests?

AFL, number One former British game in Australia by a mile!
I'll add it to the list.
I feel a new signature coming on of the list will fit.

Sure thing.
The AFL is the number One British game in Australia. Played exclusively as a league in Australia for over 120 years.
And leads all the other major indices a league is measured, by a country mile.
The list grows.
I can't even remember how many number ones that is now. Fucking heaps.
