Not what you want to hear just 3 days out from the World Cup. So does this put it in the same boat as AFL being a none international sport? :hmm:

The first sentence of this article says it all..

On the eve of its 15th World Cup, rugby league has suffered the humiliation of missing out to pole dancing, foot golf, dodgeball and kettlebell lifting in its bid to be recognised internationally as a sport.

They are an umbrella organisation for all Olympic and none Olympic international sports. Basically the governing body of international sport. Their recognition allows sport to gain government funding especially for those developing nations. So basically they do not see rugby league as a separate sport to rugby so in places like South Africa rugby can run the rugby league organisation as it does in the UAE and in Italy.

In the Bull $hit we knew it was...

Rugby League wins fight for international recognition

Rugby league's hopes of capitalising on the success of the World Cup have received a significant boost after the RLIF was granted observer status by the Global Association of International Sports Federations.

he decision, which comes after years of lobbying and campaigning the GAISF, formerly known as Sport Accord, to overcome opposition from rugby union, ensures rugby league is an officially recognised sport around the world and will enable the game to access government funding.
This will have an impact in places such as South Africa and the Middle East, where rugby union officials have aggressively opposed the growth of rugby league.
