you mean the unwritten rule that has resulted in more indigenous recruits in 2016 than in the last 10 years? Even more than the % of indigenous players currently in the NRL?

That's a good point re more supporters and representing a broader cross section of the community. When you appeal is as wide you inevidentlty capture those undesirable elements. It is indeed a broad church. unfortunetly such racists and bigots exist in our community and with afl being a mirror of the community you are bound to get such bigoted idiots in the audi nice whether they are at footy making dick heads of themselves or on Facebook expressing disgust at a burqa being worn or Easter eggs being halal certified. What is good is the rest ones. From those in the crowd reporting these idiots to the overwhelming sense of disgust shown by the media and afl. It's a shame such an element exist in society but it is good that such behaviour as witnessed here does not go unchallenged.

you have no proof of a one white parent rule, only the hear say in an article. The evidence points to the complete opposite. 15% of last years recruits were indigenous, where as the indigenous population only makes up 5% of our population. So if anything they are encouraged

AT LEAST one AFL club recruiter has privately admitted to the league that he and his club would be unlikely to draft an indigenous player unless at least one parent were white.

Some clubs have also told the AFL they were now more reluctant than ever about recruiting Aboriginal players because they provided a difficult management issue. Other clubs, however, remain firmly committed to recruiting Aboriginal players.



The AFL approached several recruiters recently to talk in general terms about rumours of unease at some clubs about recruiting indigenous players, and the drop in the number of indigenous players in the game this year. There are 80 indigenous Australians on AFL lists this year, down from 85 in each of the past two years.

The complexity of the varied cultural backgrounds that AFL players come from was brought into sharp focus by the arrest in Yuendumu of Melbourne player Liam Jurrah for an alleged assault with a machete last week.

Jason Mifsud, the AFL's community engagement manager, confirmed there was a disturbing attitude existing at some clubs. ''I have had direct conversations with a number of recruiting officers. A recruiter from one club told me that 'unless they have a white parent we are not going to draft an Aboriginal player, and our club would not be alone in that.' That is a mindset that is permeating back through parts of the industry.

JUST three indigenous players were recruited to AFL clubs in this year's national draft and another was redrafted by his club just months after Adelaide recruiter Matt Rendell was sacked for warning the AFL clubs were increasingly wary of recruiting indigenous players.

Fremantle selected Josh Simpson with its first-round draft pick, at pick 17; Gold Coast chose Tim Sumner, brother of former Sydney player Byron, with pick 55; and Geelong chose Bradley Hartman with pick 77, while West Coast redrafted Brad Dick with pick 79. It was a stark drop from several years ago when 25 per cent of the draft was indigenous.

One recruiter admitted to MIFSUD, a guy who has been shown to completely over react about these types of issues.

In the 5 years since this incident there is absolutely no evidence of this attitude in AFL recruiting. In fact if anything it's the other way with indigenous players recruited at the highest level in over a decade.

Furthermore, Rendell explained his comments saying his concern was the system made it hard for indigenous players to adjust to AFL life and wanted something done to help them. That was his motivation in telling Mifsud

Johnathan Thurston withdraws from Indigenous All Stars game
World Club challenge takes JT's focus away from next month's NRL Indigenous All Stars game.
Despite talk of the annual pre-season Indigenous All Stars match being axed, nearly 40,000 spectators turned up to the event recently.

Proof, say its supporters of the positive impact the game still has on the wider community.

"Just have a look at the All Stars concept that how many of our people turn out to watch us how many of those people are wearing jerseys with the boys names on it and that's obviously a big thanks to like I said the guys that I named before,” says Hodges.

The NRL is showing up rival codes by performing better in this area than others; in 2016 12 per cent of NRL players, and 4 per cent of staff identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

This surpasses the AFL which has 9 per cent of its players, and 3 per cent of its staff identified as indigenous.

The NRL is also aiming for 5 per cent of staff to be Indigenous by 2017, and 15 per cent of players.

Meanwhile former Fitzroy and Brisbane great and AFL Victoria Football Development Manager, Chris Johnson says there's no reason those number aren't achievable in the AFL too.
