North American syndicate sets sights on State of Origin



The promoter behind North America's failed bid to host the 2021 rugby league World Cup has now set his sights on attracting a major one-off match such as a State of Origin.

Rugby League International Federation officials caught many by surprise on Thursday when they announced England's successful bid almost a month earlier than a decision had been expected.

A State of Origin match could soon be played in the United States.
But in a significant consolation prize to Australian promoter Jason Moore, who mounted the estimated $US15 million ($19.8 million) bid independently of the United States Rugby League, the RLIF recommended North America host the 2025 tournament and a Federation Cup involving eight nations in the meantime.

USA Rugby has pulled out of bidding to host the rugby union World Cup in 2023, meaning league can still steal a march on its much larger rival Stateside despite the setback.

"Of course I am disappointed but on the other hand we now have time to play for 2025," said Moore, who declared "we don't give up".

"Although it's not a done deal, I would be surprised and disappointed if we now do not get the 2025 World Cup given what the RLIF has said publicly.


"We can now look at getting some other events over here. Perhaps a State of Origin – the sky's the limit."

Moore said he would aim to get the 2025 World Cup locked away before pressing on with plans to launch a professional or semi-professional league in the US.

Before the announcement, Fairfax Media surveyed coaches and players involved in the Four Nations and found considerable support for the US/Canada bid.

Lachlan Coote (Scotland fullback): "Probably England. It's probably safer and I think the crowds will benefit more than being in Canada and America."

Jesse Bromwich (New Zealand captain): "I'd love it to go over to the USA or Canada. Imagine that. That would be great for the game to take it over there and share our game with the Canadians and the Americans. That would be awesome."

David Kidwell (New Zealand coach): "I love it over here in the north of England. The crowds embrace it, the way they chant, we don't get to experience that over in the NRL. But I can also see the see the expansion of rugby league they are trying to do. Am I sitting on the fence? Look, if we want to expand our game ... North America."

Matt Scott (Australia prop): "That's a tough one. I'd love to see it moved around and to play in North America would be a great experience but I think the World Cup should be probably over here."

Adam Blair (New Zealand forward): "What do you reckon? A hundred per cent North America. It would be nice to go somewhere where we haven't experienced playing footy. We've been here before."

Greg Inglis (Australia centre): "I'd say North America. It would be a great trip to have and I'd love to be there in 2021."

There is so much potential for Rugby League in North America.
Millions of athletes who never made Grid Iron professionally who could still make great League players.

Then you just have to look at Rugby League culture and the game itself. It has more similarities to American Football than any other sport.

It will take time but I am sure there can be a good sized market for the game there if promoted well.

Agree... although would they go union or rl? I suggest there is room for both.

American League seems to be in on the up..
with extra funding

could really be something in 10years or so
especially with Canada joining 2nd divison in England and the rivalry being built between USA
play in 10k plus crowds..

The North American market is probably big enough to have a dozen codes there that it could be competitive at.

Is about 350 million people in Canada & USA combined.

USA are already getting good at soccer with a professional league there.
Ranked 24 in the world.
