I surf and I can tell you that there are no decent surfing beaches for miles in Melbourne when I was there.

Bells Beach 107 km from Melbourne cbd =D>
Wonthaggi Beach 132 km from Melbourne cbd :>::

Sydney Beaches
Clovelly 10 km
Maroubra 13km
Bronte 9.5 km
Tamarama 8.8km
Bondi 9.6 km
Coogee 12 km
Manly 16 km

I could mention a stack more too.

So most of the beaches you mentioned are up to 10 times further away than Sydneys local beaches.

I hold my case, Melbourne is shit for surfing. No surfing beaches close by.
