CHANNEL Seven has snuck under the guard of Channel Nine and Fox Sports to secure the television rights for the upcoming rugby league World Cup in Australia next year.

And there are plans to launch the tournament in Melbourne on Derby Day at Flemington with a Kangaroos-England blockbuster at the MCG two hours after the last race.

Channel Seven is believed to have paid almost $10 million for the Australian rights. The network’s highly respected sports news director Jim Wilson is certain to host the tournament.

Now they have to find some commentators, with most already aligned to Nine and Fox Sports on five year contracts.

The rights were owned by the International Rugby League Federation and sold to IMG to carry out a tender process with Australia’s TV networks and world broadcasters.

The tournament will be played over five weeks starting in the last weekend of October.

Seven will show the big matches on their main free-to-air channel and minor games on their digital on 7mate.

World Cup tournament director Michael brown has revealed every state and territory in Australia has been bidding to host games.

“We’re looking to achieve a good spread of matches right across the country including venues like Adelaide Oval,” Brown said, “It’s a fantastic opportunity to grow the game.

“You’ll end the NRL season in early October, have a few weeks rest, then the World Cup is on.

“We’re anticipating enormous interest and that’s why Channel Seven wanted the rights.”

Brown said Seven were keen bidders from the beginning of negotiations.

“We spoke to our partners at Nine and Fox Sports but we always knew seven wanted it,” Brown said, “It was a tender process and they were the keenest.

“It is a great result for rugby league to have the game on three networks next year.

“It gives us another reach and it’s on an AFL channel. It shows the dominance of our game

Apparently the American teams. Canada, USA and Jamaica are very evenly matched so there will be two North American teams instead of one.

No chance in winning but everyone starts from humble beginnings.

Ok folks

Let's take a walk down memory lane .

As per usual when SOO or any international RL comp is talked about the loons are out in force .

The last 4 nations got dumbo frothing at the mouth .
Here is his rant .
Note the bolded prediction that was in his usual ****** style 100% wrong .

Postby leagueiscrap » Mon Sep 29, 2014 8:45 pm

once again the four nations is dawning apon us so the copious amounts of ads for it tell me!

so like the NRL world cup, it will have piss weak rules to let players from the NRL who once took a quick holiday there, recently opened up a PO BOX in that country play for that country. so that half of the team will be jammed with NRL players not good enough to represent their own national team, but in the mean time making the other competing teams a touch more competitive.

but according to the book makers they dont see it that way
Australia $1.25
New Zealand $4.75
England $11.00 the home of league
Samoa $101.00

http://www.sportsbet.com.au/betting/rug ... ur-nations
this tournament is like the world cup but not as bad, as it only contains 4 teams, 3 teams that don't have a chance in winning, instead of the world cup, that is packed with several more minnow countries

:(/ :(/ :(/ :(/ :(/
You want to make some $$$$$
Whatever he posts or predicts ...back the opposite .

Find it amusing you like to tell us we're jealous and frothing at the mouth - when it's the exact opposite - and when have you ever stayed out of a thread because the subject matter didn't agree with you. Like I said by all means celebrate your WC :D

In fairness PNG is a RL country, and France does have a fairly respectable RL comp by all accounts - but other countries are little more than Aust/Eng teams with a couple of locals for legitimacy!
