A VETERAN football umpire says he is lucky to be alive after he was bashed and seriously injured in front of thousands of spectators during an A-Grade grand final at the weekend.

The attack has renewed calls from authorities for people to consider the potentially deadly consequences of even a single punch.

Paul Fitzgerald, 56, suffered a fractured eye socket and nose, and bleeding in his eye, when he was punched once in the head at Port Pirie on Saturday.

FOOTBALL bosses are trying to tackle umpire abuse, by forcing coaches of teams as young as under-8s to shake hands with umpires before bouncedown.
The AFL in February said it was negotiating for all coaches to shake hands with umpires in the middle of the ground before each game.
But the WA Football Commission this week confirmed it was rolling out the strategy across all levels of the game in WA, including forcing coaches at Auskick games to make peace with umpires.
Last Sunday a 53-year-old junior football umpire was bashed during an under-14s game between Quinns Rocks and Yanchep in Perth's northern suburbs. The umpire, from Iluka, was left with facial injuries which required medical treatment.

A junior football match was abandoned over the weekend after a player allegedly attacked an umpire and broke his nose.

The alleged incident occurred on Sunday in the under-16s game between Mt Eliza and Chelsea at Madsen Reserve in Mount Eliza.

It started after a visiting player from Chelsea was penalised by the umpire for verbal abuse.

As the 20-year-old umpire reached down to pull out a red card, the player allegedly kneed him in the face, then attacked him.

Frankston and District Junior Football League president Stuart Mason confirmed the game had to be abandoned.

Look IMO this is a pointless thread I don't thinking one code and condemning it is a good idea - pointing a finger at RL and saying see I told you so because they fuck up is toignore our fuck ups in AFL - footy players are picked due to skill and ability not brain power - I won't cast stones at the NRL about this issue for that very reason! ALL AS BAD AS ONE ANOTHER IMO!

I'm not going to throw stones on this one - run ins with the law and unlawful behaviour is common to both codes - there is nothing to be gained as it is a problem to both codes!

Depends where you live - what a RL player gets up to in NSW means little in SA or WA when players like Cousins etc would be of higher profile - both sports have had a lot of problems re-culture and attitude towards women. I think they are both as bad as one another.

You are an idiot they statements relate to different issues - players off field behaviour is similar for all codes - but when it comes down to on field behaviour that is a different issue so STFU moron! I stand by both - touching a ref is not accepted in ANY other code and is sacrosanct but RL go for it! That is one example how about all the calls by prominent RL calling for shoulder charges to be allowed - there is a culture issue with RL and violence in field and you don't have the balls to admit it. AFL a little bit of push and shove is frowned upon and called a melee - it just shows your not objective and can't admit a single thing which is adverse to RL your pathetic!
