Spriggs too pricey for Blues

CARLTON knew any hope it had of landing pacy midfielder David Spriggs was over when he priced himself out of reach.

Spriggs was invited to pre-season training at Optus Oval and had impressed officials with his athleticism and fitness before Saturday's draft.

A hard-running rover and former junior 1500m champion, Spriggs, 24, was delisted by the Cats after five games for the season and 64 since 2000.

It's understood he contacted Sydney last week, ending any Carlton thought of snaring him late in the draft.

And he ruled out any idea the Blues had of drafting him earlier at 25 when he lifted his price tag.

The Blues had allocated their third pick to Luke Blackwell under the father-son rule, leaving its next pick of 73 open.

But the Swans took him at No. 47 with their second pick.

Former Swan and Cat assistant coach Daryn Cresswell cleared the way for Spriggs' move.

"Cressa is a big Spriggs fan," Swan coach Paul Roos said.

"He is an elite runner, has pace and he's hard at the footy."

Hopefully Spriggs works out in Sydney. Would hate to think he was a wasted and expensive draft pick.
