Live sport broadcasts may never be the same again.

Frustrations over clashes between games may become a thing of the past, as new technology hands armchair viewers more power than ever to dictate their own content consumption.

After Wednesday's (Thursday AEST) launch of the new Apple TV, Major League Baseball's At Bat app is emerging as a game changer in the way live sport is broadcast and viewed by those at home.

There has been an MLB app on Apple TV for some time, however the new incarnation will give fans the chance to operate as their own TV producer from the comfort of their own home.

The app will allow users control the finer details of the viewing experience - from customisable replays to 3D renderings of grounds, and in-play statistics.

The At Bat iOS app, which has been available on iPhones and iPads for some time, even offers archived games, Spanish radio coverage and a real-time Twitter feed - and the Apple TV edition promises even more features, including instant clickable notifcations of significant action in other games.

In a sport where dozens of games can be played at the same time, viewers will be able to choose which match they watch and also have the autonomous ability to watch numerous games at the same time - without having to change channel - to keep tabs on results that may influence other outcomes.

On-screen notifications will allow viewers to keep up to date, and potentially pull up live action in real-time.

Of course, you'll need to purchase an MLB subscription at $US24 ($34) per year, but with a crystal-clear frame rate of 60 fps and features up the wazoo, it is sure to be a big hit with armchair baseball enthusiasts.

MLB is the first major sport to introduce the technology on this scale, but there are already content deals in place between Apple TV and ice hockey's NHL for 2016, as well as with the PGA (golf).

If extended to other major codes and organisations, it could mean the final day of the English Premier League season won't require constant glances at other screens or furiously changing channels after the action has happened.

NBA's hectic schedule could allow for a less chaotic viewing experience, while those just wanting to follow "The Hayne Plane" will have the ability to tailor the display to focus solely on the former NRL star.

It is not yet known if such technology is already being applied to Australian sports but it is unlikely to be far away.

It's a rapidly changing media landscape .
The balls in uncy ruperts court .
He can do nothing ,forego the NRL rights & lose a Shitload of customers.(already started with non sports companies ...Netflix..etc eating away at the subscription base) .
Can try to wait out the ARLC or lowball ...very risky .
Or pay up .

The above article shows that if he doesn't get the NRL deal wrapped up then new technology will leave him behind .

Interesting times .

Lol
Self ownage at its best .
So uncle Rupy one of the most successful business identities in the world has Outlayed 1. 3 billion for AFLOL .
Lots of $$$$ to be paid using the results of your fave rant .
4800 ratings boxes .
Blah blah
Double counting .
Flawed flawed
Basement dwellers .

In fact here is part of your rant ...which you won't discuss for some reason

the TV companies when choosing to give out those rating boxes complete surveys then choose to distribute the rating boxes to which ever basement dwelling looser that watches the most TV during the week, so then the TV companies can then go to the advertisers & claim we have so many hundred thousand people watch out network

So either Rupert is smart or you're smarter .
Cause he got sucked in by the ratings box rip off ,that only you seem to know about .

How is it deflecting .
Media companies outlay $$$ on the results of ratings .
How do they get these ratings .
By gathering the data from ratings boxes .
The very same ones you rant about .

So why won't you answer the question .
Either Rupert is smart like you claim ,& Outlayed the money because of ratings gathered .

Or according to your other claim ,he has been duped by some scam ratings box system .

Which is it .
You've got two totally opposing views .
Well done .
