AN AFL gay pride game to tackle homophobia has been added to the football calendar.

The Herald Sun can reveal footy’s first “Pride Cup” match will be played between Sydney and Fremantle during this month’s NAB Challenge.

There are plans for a permanent fixture celebrating sexual diversity during the AFL premiership season.

St Kilda is at the front of the queue to own the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex concept.

League chiefs ticked off the Swans and Dockers clash this week after a push by major sponsor NAB.

Yes, started in 2013 was bigger last year, a round of games EPL, Championship (2nd div) and League 1 (div 3) was designated as anti-homophobia and a number of players wore "rainbow" boot laces to show support, it was organised by a charity called stonewall and supported by one of the large betting agencies in 2013 before the Football Association got on board in 2014 and made it "official"

I think still someway to go before it is accepted across all teams but having half the EPL teams on board is a good thing

Aker advises gay players to keep it in the closet
Updated 20 May 2010, 6:49am

Outspoken AFL player Jason Akermanis has warned gay players the game is not ready for them to come out of the closet.

"If a player wants to out himself, then I say good luck," the Western Bulldogs star wrote in his weekly Herald Sun column.

"But I believe the world of AFL footy is not ready for it. To come out is unnecessary for a lot of reasons.

"Imagine the publicity associated with a current player admitting he's gay. It would be international news and could break the fabric of a club."

Akermanis said an openly gay player could make his team-mates uncomfortable.

"Locker room nudity and homoerotic activities are normal inside footy clubs," he wrote.

He said it was not the role of sport to lead the way in changing community attitudes.

"Away from football I'm all for any initiative that helps lessen public bias against homosexuality, such as IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia), which was run on Monday.

"I know there are many who think a public AFL outing would break down homophobia, but they don't live in football clubs.

"It's not the job of the minority to make the environment safer. Not now, anyway."

fair enough, I don't agree with you, but you have the right to think like that.

What I know the EPL was trying to do, and I assume the AFL is trying to do is not so much as make it compulsory :) but rather stop people being abused or scared to play because they are gay.

And from what you have said I don't believe you fall into the category of someone who would do that, so in reality you are not their target, but rather the knuckle draggers that hurl abuse at people that are gay.

I really don't think Rugby League appeals to the gay community like AFL does though.
So is really no point in the NRL trying to celebrate a minority group that mostly does not really like their sport any way.
